One person was killed in an accident on a German highway after he drove his truck into a cargo container filled with iron material that was left on the road. Three other cars then struck the truck, resulting in four other injuries.
The accident happened just past midnight on Thursday when the container dislodged from a truck being driven by a Dutch operator with no valid driver's license. The 42-year-old man, from Goor, Overijssel, was later found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.74 per mille.
An impending winter storm on Sunday prompted Dutch football association KNVB to suspend all matches that day. Four matches in the top level Eredivisie will be rescheduled, as well as the country's full slate of amateur football matches, the KNVB said on Saturday.
The Eredivisie matches include FC Utrecht vs. Ajax, AZ vs. Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam vs. ADO Den Haag, and FC Emmen vs. FC Twente.

A Dutch-Turkish family in Deventer fled their home on Monday after two separate firework bomb attacks over the weekend. Police responsible for surveilling the neighborhood said it was not safe to remain in the home, according to broadcaster RTV Oost.
The police found a thousand kilograms of illegal fireworks in a garage on Tichlerstraat in IJsselmuiden on Sunday, after receiving an anonymous tip. Two men were arrested, the Overijssel police said on Twitter.

Lawyer Philippe Schol was walking his dog some 50 meters from his home on Lossersestraße in Gronau when he was shot by persons in a passing car at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The victim told neighbors who rushed to help him that he was shot by two men he knows and that they were driving a Volkswagen Polo, the neighbors told newspaper AD.
Josef B. was remanded into custody by a magistrate on Thursday for at least another 14 days while an investigation continues into the family found living in a hidden room on his farm. A 7-year-old boy drowned in a pond in the Overijssel village of Overdinkel on Tuesday evening. First responders tried to resuscitate the child, but it was to no avail.
Emergency services responded to the pond on Elferinksweg just after 9:00 p.m. after receiving a report of a drowning, AD reports. The boy was taken out of the water and paramedics tried to revive him. But it was too late. He died at at the scene.
How the boy ended up in the water is not clear.
An extensive aid program is ready for the two Dutch orphans, aged 2 and 4 years, who were brought back to the Netherlands from a refugee camp in Syria, radicalization expert Annebregt Dijkman said to newspaper AD. The two young children's parents died in Syria. Their mother, Karenia J. from Zwolle, died due to an illness. And their father, a Belgian jihadist, was killed, according to the newspaper.
A police canine team in Almelo found a missing 88-year-old woman from the Overijssel city on Monday night. Authorities then rescued the woman who was conscious, but suffering from symptoms of hypothermia, police said.
The woman, who uses a walker, went missing from the Aletta Jacobsstraat at about 4:15 p.m. “In the night, the missing woman was found by a dog handler. He was searching with his service dog in the vicinity of the location provided [online],” police said in a statement.
A Dutch man was critically injured Wednesday night after he impaled himself on a fence while apparently taking a shortcut to a casino. The Almelo man was walking to a gambling house in Ahaus, Germany when he climbed over a fence that separated a playground from the casino grounds, the District Police in Borken, Germany said in a statement.
He slipped as he tried to hop the fence, and the sharp tip of the fencing pierced his thigh. He remained hanging there, crying out for help shortly after the incident happened at 12:20 a.m.
The police are urgently searching for 16-year-old Melisa from the Gelderland village of Deelen. The girl left her mother in Borne on foot at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday and hasn't been seen since. It is not known where she was heading.

Dutch national railway NS will run a reduced schedule on Wednesday morning with forecasted snow expected to fall across much of the country. Up to 3 centimeters of snow is expected across much of the Netherlands.
The limited train schedule is in place so the NS can quickly respond to problems, and provide more accurate travel information, the railway said. Passengers can expect longer travel times and more crowded trains.
