Two people were arrested on Thursday in connection with the death of a baby in Brunssum, Limburg last week. The suspects were the baby's childminders, well-informed sources told De Limburger.

On Wednesday last week, emergency services responded to a home in Brunssum after a report of a sick child. The five month old baby was resuscitated on the spot and rushed to the hospital, where the child died a short time later. The police launched an investigation due to doubt about the cause of the child's death. The investigation revealed that the baby did not die of natural causes.

On Wednesday night the police prevented a helicopter hijacking in Limburg. According to a statement released by the police, criminals from the Amsterdam underworld wanted to use this helicopter to break a convict out of the penitentiary in Roermond. During the police intervention in Roosteren, one suspect was shot by a member of a SWAT team. He died of his injuries. Three others were arrested.

An older couple was arrested in Gennep, Limburg in an Dutch-led international investigation into fraud and money laundering, the Public Prosecutor announced. The 81-year-old man and 61-year-old woman are accused of tax fraud, money laundering, forgery and illegal banking. According to the Prosecutor, the amount involved in the couple's crimes is estimated at over 41 million euros.

From this week the Dutch Ministry of Public Health is distributing iodine tablets in provinces located near nuclear plants. The pills are intended to protect against a certain type of radiation should there be a nuclear disaster. According to the Ministry, around 3 million people in large parts of the regions of Oost-Nederland, Noord-Nederland, Noord-Brabant, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland and Limburg will receive a packet of pills in the mail by the end of next week, the Volkskrant reports.

Limburg mental health institution Mondriaan will stop treatment for a number of children in the coming weeks, director Juliette van Eerd said to NRC. Due to municipal budget cuts, the institution has to provide the same care with fewer and fewer people, and the situation is unsustainable, Van Eerd said.

Press photographer Chris Keulen was arrested in Limburg on Sunday for refusing to hand over his camera and photos to the police, ANP reports. This happened while he was reporting on noise problems caused by NATO aircraft.

Keulen took photos of a local activist and an American soldier in civilian clothing coming to blows during an argument near the NATO base Geilenkirchen. After the fight, Keulen went to the police station to give a witness statement. He was asked to hand over his photos, but he refused, appealing to press freedom.

One person was killed in a shooting in a home on Bosscherweg in Maastricht on Wednesday night, the police said on Twitter. The victim's identity is not yet known.

Local residents reported hearing bangs fro the home around 11:00 p.m., according to ANP. Responding officers found a wounded person in the home, who died despite first responders' aid.

The police closed down the area for investigation. No arrests were made as yet, a spokesperson said to the news wire.

The diocese of Roermond is advising parishes, municipalities and individuals to replace their Jesus on the cross statues with plastic copies to prevent them from being stolen. According to diocese spokesperson Matheu Bemelmans, the number of thefts and vandalism on these statues or statues of Maria increased over the past year, ANP reports.

A 68-year-old man from Leeuwen in Limburg was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting minor girls, the Limburger reports. A police spokesperson confirmed to the newspaper that he was arrested on July 19th and is still in custody. The man was caught after someone pressed charges against hi.

How many girls were involved is not yet clear. A spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor told broadcaster NOS that the investigation into the extent and seriousness of the case is still ongoing. No further announcements will be made for the time being.

The police found two bodies in an apartment on Graafschap Hornelaan in Weert, Limburg on Monday morning. Exactly what happened in the home is still unclear. The police are investigating, ANP reports.

According to Eindhovens Dagblad, the victims are a man and a woman. Around 9:30 a.m. emergency services received a report that the two did not show up at work. The police went to check the home and found the bodies.

De Limburger reported that there was a fight at the same address earlier on Monday morning, but the police deny this.

Nijmegen student Elle Custers is missing in France, the Limburg police reported on Sunday. The 20-year-old woman did not arrive at her holiday address over the weekend. Her parents had contact with her for the last time on Friday.

Elle is from Spaubeek in Limburg. According to the police, she traveled from Spain, where she worked as an au pair, to Bordeaux in France by train and bicycle. She contacted her parents from Bordeaux on Friday. She had a train ticket to travel from Bordeaux to Sainte Foy la Grande on Saturday. Whether she made this journey is unclear.

February 15th, March 30th and 31st, May 27th and 29th and June 15th and 21st also broke heat records. 

Today is exceptionally hot in the Netherlands, especially in the southeast with maximums ranging between 33 and 35 degrees. Some places may even hit 36 degrees Celsius.

Afternoon temperatures will range from 23 degrees on the Wadden islands to 30 degrees in the east. Though those hoping for a beautiful summer's day will be disappointed - storms are expected to hit the country this afternoon.

A motorist was killed in a car accident while fleeing from the police in Limburg during the early hours of Monday morning, local news agency De Limburger reports. Why the police were chasing the suspect is unclear.

The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Gasthuis road between Bemelen and Sibbe. It seems the motorist lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. 

The police are investigating the incident.

An eagle-owl chick narrowly escaped death in the Limburg town of Eygelshoven on Wednesday. The baby animal somehow found his way into a coal mill. If alert employees hadn't noticed him, there would be nothing of the bird left.

The mill employees quickly turned the machine off and called the local Animal Ambulance, according to AD. One of the rescuers, Rene Coumans, posted a video and photos of the rescue on his Facebook page and was flooded with reactions.

A man was killed while struggling with two armed men who entered his home in Landgraaf, Limburg during the early hours of Wednesday morning. He bled out after being stabbed. His girlfriend and three children were left unharmed, the police said in a statement.

A freight train collided with a truck in northern Limburg on Tuesday morning. The accident happened at a railway crossing near Colombusweg, between Blerick and Sevenum. No one was injured. No train traffic will be possible between Eindhoven and Venlo for the rest of the day, ProRail expects, ANP reports.

After a total of 513 donations and giving 333 liters of blood, Limburg man Frans Hollander is retiring. He donated blood for the last time on Monday, L1 reports.

At the age of 69, Hollander from Rijkholt was forced to retire. According to Dutch rules, you can't be a donor after the age of 70. This age limit is intended to protect the donor, as many elderly people aren't able to donate blood. 

Hollander would've liked to continue for another few years. "It's little effort to help sick people this way. And it's nice here", he said to L1.

The police arrested a Limburg bailiff on Monday for telling women that if they have sex with him, he would wipe out their debts. A total of 11 women pressed charges against the man, AD reports.

The Public Prosecutor and police have been. The authorities believe that he's been sexually harassing women in this way since 2001.
