Suspect arrested for leaving grenades at Delft coffeeshops

The police arrested a 40-year-old man from The Hague on the suspicion that he detonated hand grenades at two coffeeshops in Delft in May. The man had a hand grenade, weapons and ammunition in his car when he was arrested last month, the Public Prosecutor announced on Monday.

The man was arrested on June 12th, along with two other suspects. Until recently the suspects were in restricted custody, which is why more details about the arrests were only announced on Monday.

A 22-year-old man from Delft, who was in the car with the suspect, was arrested on suspicion of illegal weapons possession. While searching a building in Rijswijk, "where the 40-year-old Hagenaar apparently stayed", the police found another hand grenade and drugs. The resident of the building, a 30-year-old woman, was arrested for the possession of these items. All three suspects are still in custody.

Over the past weeks there were multiple incidents targeting businesses in Delft. On May 8th dozens of gunshots were fired on coffeeshop The Future and tanning salon Sunstyle on Peperstraat. On May 17th, The Future was again targeted in an attack. This time hand grenades were detonated at The Future, as well as at coffeeshop The Game on Breestraat. A passerby was injured. On June 12th shots were fired at two buildings - a catering facility on Beestenmarkt and accessory shop Sisters on Molslaan. And on Wednesday, June 27th, a hand grenade was found in front of a home on Neringstraat.

According to the Public Prosecutor, these incidents are being investigated separately, but by the same team of detectives. "At the moment all scenarios are taken into account, but any cross connections will be noticed quickly in this way."
