Resumption of Eurostar's Channel Tunnel trains uncertain; Some issues on Dutch railroads

International rail operator Eurostar plans to resume all trains to and from London on Wednesday which use through the Channel Tunnel. However, the company is still warning of last-minute cancellations and further delays. In the Netherlands, Dutch railroad manager ProRail said icy weather conditions was also a factor causing issues on domestic routes.

On Tuesday, Eurostar began cancelling all trains to and from London due to problems with the overhead lines in the Channel Tunnel, including service to Amsterdam. Later in the day, Channel Tunnel owner GetLink was able to reopen one of the railroad tracks, allowing some services to restart.

Eurostar was unable to restore service between Amsterdam and London into Tuesday evening, even as it gradually began to resume service to the British capital. The company said that there were still some issues with the rail infrastructure overnight into Wednesday morning, and has advised passengers to monitor the website or app.

The Eurostar warning remained even as Getlink reported late on Tuesday that traffic through the tunnel was expected to return to normal.

Separately, fewer trains were operating Wednesday morning on several domestic routes in the Netherlands, and a few international routes. This was due to ice on the overhead lines, with temperatures falling in some parts of the country to -5 degrees Celsius.

In southern Limburg, trains were not running between Maastricht and Aachen, Germany, nor between Maastricht and Liège, Belgium. Dutch national railway NS said it expects the icy conditions to disappear during the morning.

There was frost on the overhead lines between Amersfoort Central Station and Barneveld-Zuid. Because of the formation of ice crystals, fewer trains were able to run on that route.

A Code Yellow weather warning for cold weather was in place across nearly all of the Netherlands, and was likely to be lifted by 10 a.m. nearly everywhere. However, it could remain in place through the end of the morning in both Limburg and Noord-Brabant.
