Police close Amsterdam streets over suspicious object
The police closed off Voetboogstraat and surrounding streets in Amsterdam center for hours on Thursday morning due to the discovery of a suspicious object. Officers and explosive experts were at the scene between midnight and 3:00 a.m., NU.nl reports.
A spokesperson for the police could not tell the newspaper exactly what the object was. On Twitter the police only said that the investigation is completed and more information will follow during the course of the day.
Multiple hand grenades were found in Amsterdam city center over the past year. A grenade was found tied to the door of soon-to-open lunch room Tropicana on Jan Evertsenstraat on Tuesday. In February the same thing happened to another shop on the same street. Hand grenades were also found at club ABE, cafe In the City and cocktail bar Suzy Wong Lounge this year and last.
On Wednesday morning an explosive went off at restaurant Marovaan on Johan Huizingalaan in Amsterdam West. On Tuesday morning shots were fired at a cleaning business on the same street, and an explosive was found behind the building. On Sunday another shooting targeted the building next to the cleaning company.
