Hand grenade safely removed from Amsterdam street

The police safely removed a hand grenade found in the doorway of a nightclub on Amstelstraat in Amsterdam on Thursday morning. The grenade was made harmless and removed by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, RTL Nieuws reports.

The hand grenade was found by cleaning staff, who noticed it in the doorway of ABE nightclub while cleaining the street around 9:30 a.m.

As a precaution, the police evacuated homes in the immediate vicinity and closed down part of the street. Tram traffic was also halted for a time. The street is now open to the public again.

The police are investigating where the hand grenade came from. Investigators call on witnesses to come forward.
