Dennis Kramer, a 9-year-old Dutch-Thai boy that lives in Zwolle, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Mark Rutte to ask if the Netherlands can help a young football team and their coach who are stuck in a cave in Thailand.

The 12 boys and their coach went missing in the cave on June 23rd. On July 2nd, they were all found alive, but they are still trapped there by water. The rescue operation is pumping water out of the cave system, but as it is monsoon season in Thailand, this is not having much of an effect.

Engineers in the American city of New Orleans are working with the Dutch government and Dutch researchers to come up with a way to make the Louisiana city more flood-resistant,Twelve years after Hurricane Katrina basically destroyed the city, New Orleans is again facing flooding with Hurricane Harvey heading its way.

Arcadis signed a 11.6 million dollar deal with the American city of Norfolk to help protect the city from flooding, the consulting and engineering firm announced. Part of the water management knowledge will be provided by Arcadis Nederland, ANP reports. 

The deal involves coming up with a plan to help the city, located in the state of Virginia, be better protected against and prepared for flooding. Dutch knowledge institutes and the Dutch embassy in Washington are also participating in the project.

A group of water engineers, led by Dutch engineering firm Grontmij, has come up with a plan to prevent the refugee camp in the South Sudanese town Bentiu turning into a swamp during the raining seasons. The project is estimated to cost 20 million euros, of which the Netherlands will contribute 5.4 million. Other financiers include the United Nations, the European Union and Switzerland.

This week Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan is leading a delegation of Dutch companies, knowledge- and cultural institutions in a visit to India, the municipality of Amsterdam announced in a press release today.
