Commuters having to deal with traffic on the A4 highway, will have to do so more often and for longer in the coming decade. The widening of the highway that connects Amsterdam and The Hague will only start in 2026, and will not be completed until 2030, the Telegraaf reports. .

"That means another ten years of driving bumper to bumper and no prospect of improvement. In fact, it will only get worse," Frits van Bruggen, director of travelers' association ANWB, said to the newspaper.

The Netherlands business community suffered 1.4 billion euros in damages last year caused by trucks being stuck in traffic jams, according to a study by Panteia on behalf of business association Evofenedex and Dutch transport and logistics organization TLN, RTL Nieuws reports.

At 1.4 billion euros, the traffic damage in 2018 was 5.6 percent higher than the year before. The largest portion of these damages, 26.1 million euros, came from the daily traffic jams on the A4 between the Burgerveen junction and the Prins Clausplein junction.

Overdue maintenance on bridges and tunnels can lead to a traffic disaster on the Dutch road network, according to a study by engineering firm Sweco on behalf of Bouwend Nederland. Traffic organizations ANWB and TLN call on parliamentarians to intervene. "The flow to the periphery is seriously impeded; cities can become unreachable", the groups wrote in a letter to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, AD reports.

Dutch truckers are facing major problems with the new toll registration system Belgium implemented last last year, the Dutch organization for transport and logistics TLN said to broadcaster NOS. Hundreds of truckers received fines because the the toll registration box installed in their trucks doesn't work properly, according to TLN.

The number of robberies from trucks in the Netherlands is increasing explosively.In the first three months of this year there were 136 cases of trucks' cargo being stolen, a 46 percent increase compared to the same period last year, AD reports based on figures from the National Police.

According to the police, foreign gangs are responsible for most of these robberies. There have even been a few cases of cargo being stolen while the truck is moving.

The next Dutch government should include a Minister for Mobility, who must focus on improving the connection in and between cities to prevent a further increase in traffic jams and accidents, according to a manifest set up by a coalition consisting of seven major public transporters and car companies, NOS reports.

Professional gangs are reportedly siphoning large amounts of diesel from trucks. It is estimated that there are hundreds of cases, where some ten thousand liters of diesel have been stolen, the Telegraaf reports.
