The fault that caused a major disruption to train traffic in and around Amsterdam on Tuesday evening was the result of a software error, which was caused by a unique combination of circumstances after a shoplifter fled into the Schiphol tunnel, rail manager ProRail said, RTL Nieuws reports.

Last week the police arrested over 100 people in a nationwide campaign against so-called 'mobile banditry' - gangs of criminals that travel from place to place to commit crimes. The detainees include shoplifters, baby formula thieves, pickpockets, drug traffickers, identity thieves and even a fake cop, the police said in a statement on Monday night.

The nationwide action was held between Tuesday and Friday last week. Multiple people were arrested at Amsterdam Central Station for pickpocketing, or attempts thereto.

The police responded that 400 detectives work on hundreds of human trafficking cases per year, including the exploitation of Roma children. Police officers will get extra training this year on recognizing the signs of human trafficking.

Two employees of the Sligro branch in Gouda are being questioned by the police on Tuesday in connection with the death of a shoplifter two weeks ago, AD reports.

Two weeks ago a 34-year-old Polish man was caught stealing from the wholesaler. When he was addressed on this behavior, he tried to flee. He repeatedly ran into the glass sliding door until it broke, and then he jumped through the window, according to the newspaper. Two employees overpowered him and held him until the police arrived.

A 9-year-old child threatened store personnel in Eindhoven with a knife after he was caught shoplifting. The store employees stopped the boy before he could leave the Action store and tried to take him to the office. He pulled a knife and started waving it about, ANP reports.

The employees managed to take the knife from the boy. The 9-year-old grabbed a pen and again tried to stab the employees. When the employees took the pen from him, he started screaming.

A 44 year old man from Naarden will not be prosecuted for overpowering an alleged shoplifter in November last year. The shoplifter died shortly afterwards.
