No charges filed in shoplifter's death

A 44 year old man from Naarden will not be prosecuted for overpowering an alleged shoplifter in November last year. The shoplifter died shortly afterwards. The 45 year old man from Almere allegedly stole a bottle of whiskey from a supermarket in Amsterdam-Duivendrecht. The man from Naarden chased the man down and overpowered him. He kept the shoplifter in a neck hold while he waited for the police. The Almere man became unwell moments after being arrested by the police. The man had to be resuscitated and died a short time later. The autopsy has now concluded the the man's death is rather due to heart disease, than to the struggle with the man from Naarden. The Naarden man will therefore not be prosecuted. The police officers who arrested the man are also not to blame.
