KLM is extending the cancellation of its flights to mainland China through to at least mid-March, the Dutch airline announced on Thursday. The airline first canceled all its flights to mainland China early this month, due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus. "The health of employees and customers is paramount in all KLM decisions," the airline said.

Dutch airline KLM announced the cancellation of its flights scheduled to serve China. The new cancellations will begin from February 2, to give passengers in China a better chance to return to the Netherlands as the coronavirus outbreak there continues.

The schedule will remain on hold at least through February 9. The announcement affects flights to Shanghai, and seven flights to Beijing, KLM said on Thursday. The airline cited advice it received from the World Health Organization as a primary factor in making the cuts,

KLM began canceling its direct flights to China due to the outbreak of coronavirus ​2019-CoV, the Dutch airline announced on Wednesday. All direct flights between Schiphol Airport and Chengdu and Hangzhou were scrapped beginning January 30, as were all nonstop flights to Xiamen starting Friday. 

The airline also reduced its schedule to Shanghai from 11 flights weekly down to seven. The reduced schedule is in effect through February 29.

Dutch e-sports squad Team Liquid came in second place at The International in Shanghai on Sunday. The Dutch team lost to OG in the final round of the Dota 2 tournament. As runner-up, Team Liquid won around 4.5 million euros. The winner walked away with some 15.5 million dollar, NOS reports.

The International is the largest game tournament in the world, with a total prize pool of more than 34 million euros. For comparison, the Word Cup for Fortnite in July had a total prize pool of 30 million dollars.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines signed an agreement on Thursday to expand its joint venture with China Southern Airlines through a partnership with Xiamen Airlines, KLM stated in a press release. From July 26, Xiamen Airlines will fly three weekly roundtrips between Amsterdam and Xiamen, thus bringing the total number of weekly codeshared return trips on the route to six.

KLM will cut 22 flights from its schedule beginning in May after the airline was unable to come to an agreement with its labour unions on a new collective bargaining agreement. Regular flights to Bangkok, Nairobi and Shanghai will be scrapped, while trips to new destination Edmonton is postponed, newswire ANP reported.
