The Ukrainian government did inform the Dutch government about the dangerous situation in the country's airspace before the shooting down of the flight MH17. The Dutch government however did not pass the information forward to the airlines, according to the government's response to parliamentary questions. MPs have asked for clarification on the issue.

Out of discussions with the Ukrainian government, Minister Timmermans has drawn up a treaty that would allow Dutch personnel in the East of the country to arm themselves in case clashes escalate and their own safety is not secured.

If the security situation allows, then the Australian and Dutch experts may be able to enter the area. A decision will be made in the morning.
