Multiple fires were caused by lightning strikes while thunderstorms raged across the Netherlands on Wednesday. No one was hurt in the fires. An 18-year-old student was struck by lightning at a military base in Ossendrecht. He was admitted to a burns center in Antwerp with burns and severe damage to his lungs, his school reported.
A lightning strike left 14 military students injured at the army base in Ossendrecht on Wednesday morning. One student sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital by trauma helicopter. The other 13 were taken to hospital for examination, the Koninklijke Marechaussee said on Twitter.
The students involved are studying the Safety & Craftsmanship course at ROC, according to RTL Nieuws. According to the Marechaussee, the lightning strike happened on a military training ground.
Exactly what happened, is not yet clear.
The Dutch Safety Board is positive about the measures the Ministry of Defense is implementing following a fatal shooting accident in Ossendrecht and a fatal mortar grenade explosion in Mali. Defense is taking recommendations to improve the culture and safety seriously and is "raising the bar for itself", according to the Safety Board, NOS reports.
The family of a military sergeant killed in an accident during a shooting drill in Ossendrecht two years ago, submitted a damage claim to the Ministry of Defense. The family is claiming damage caused by loss of income as well as emotional damage, lawyer Michael Ruperti said to ANP.
The lawyer would not comment on the amount involved in the claim. Defense has until March 1st to respond, or a lawsuit will be filed.
A police training session has prompted an internal investigation after live ammunition suddenly exploded when a bullet cartridge was removed from a weapon. The incident sent shrapnel from the cartridge into a police officer's protective equipment, though there were no injuries.

For the first time ever, Dutch soldiers are pressing charges against their employer. The Public Prosecutor will not prosecute three commando soldiers involved in the death of a colleague during training in Ossendrecht last year. The soldiers were wrongly suspected of death by negligence and the cases against them were dropped, the Prosecutor announced on Wednesday, ANP reports.
