Five veterans of the Second World War were refused entry to the Airborne memorial in Arnhem on Friday night. Arnhem mayor Ahmed Marcouch called their refusal "extremely painful". On Sunday he offered them apologies and a gift. "Unfortunately, this went wrong. We should do better next time", the mayor said, RTL Nieuws reports.
Power outages in Amsterdam and Arnhem left thousands of people in the dark on Monday. Power is already restored to Amsterdam, and Arnhem residents should have electricity again by 1:30 p.m., grid manager Liander said on Twitter.
The Amsterdam outage affected some 26,700 residents of West and Nieuw-West, according to Het Parool. The Slotervaart hospital had to switch to backup power, but the OLVG hospital and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital were unaffected. The outage also caused some disruptions to tram lines 1, 2 and 17.
A 19-year-old truck driver involved in an accident on the A12 highway near Oosterbeek on Monday night, pulled a man from his burning car with the help of a bystander, the police said on Tuesday morning. The 46-year-old man from Vaassen was rushed to a hospital in Utrecht in a trauma helicopter, AD reports.
The accident happened around 9:00 p.m. at the Oosterbeek off-ramp on the A12 highway towards Arnhem. The 46-year-old man crashed his car into the back of a truck, which was driven by the 19-year-old man from Oss. The car went up in flames, also setting fire to the truck.
