Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture is intervening at Dutch slaughterhouses after another undercover video was published showing workers at a slaughterhouse in IJsselstein beating pigs and pulling crippled animals by the tail. Schouten was shocked by the video. "You cannot use violence against animals. This is unacceptable," she said to RTL Nieuws.

The video was released by RTL Nieuws on Friday. It shows slaughterhouse employees beating the animals in their care, sometimes with inspectors from Dutch food safety authority NVWA watching on or even participating.

Damage to private property caused this past New Year's Eve in the Netherlands is expected to reach roughly 15 million euros, but the estimated value is expected rise higher when the extend of damage to commercial property is included. The cost estimate from the Dutch Association of Insurers, which does not include medical expenses due to fireworks-related injuries, is similar to figures released a year ago.

The Dutch authorities managed to hack into the phones of two men suspected of assassinating Samir Erraghib in IJsselstein in 2016. The Public Prosecutor believes that data from these phones will reveal which of the two suspects was the gunman, was revealed during the appeal in this case, ANP reports.

The Public Prosecutor did not reveal what data was retrieved from the phones, in order not to jeopardize another investigation. The case was therefore postponed for three months.

The A2 highway is closed in both directions between Nieuwegein and IJsselstein due to the discovery of a "suspicious object" on the highway near Nieuwegein on Wednesday. The police and an explosive expert are at the scene to investigate, the police said on Twitter. 

The object was found at the Hooglands Jaagpad, next to the Hollandsche IJssel. The nature of the object is still unclear, though according to AD, it is being described as an "explosive-like object".

Two men were arrested on the A1 in Apeldoorn on Tuesday night after the police found four automatic firearms, about 110 kilos of amphetamine and about 160 kilos of hash and hemp hidden among a shipment of flowers in their truck, the police announced.

The truck of flowers, on its way to Germany, was searched around 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday. When checking the cargo area, the police noticed a large box containing what looked like a firearm among the flowers. Closer inspection showed that it was an automatic firearm.

The annual award for making the best "oliebollen" in the Netherlands again went to baker Voskamp from Spijkenisse. This is the third time Voskamp wins newspaper AD's oliebollen test, previous wins were 2015 and 2010. 

Oliebollen are a traditional Dutch snack that is something of a cross between a dumpling and a donut, sometimes called Dutch donuts or just Dutchies in English.

The police arrested a second suspect in connection with a shooting in IJsselstein on Sunday in which a 37 year old man was killed in front of his daughter.

A 37-year-old man of Moroccan descent was gunned down in front of his daughter in IJsselstein, in the province of Utrecht on Sunday morning. A bystander rushed him to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. The police arrested one suspect.

The police received the first reports of the shooting on Lanceerplaats at around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. According to newspaper AD, he was attacked just after getting into his car, on his way to taking his daughter to an Arabic lesson. She was already in the car.

The repair of the IJsselstein house that was heavily damaged by a toppling crane in December, has been delayed. According to Arnold Wagemakers of housing corporation Provides (which owns the house), the delays are caused by the bad weather.

Rotterdam Miniworld has recreated the infamous scene of the wedding proposal-gone-wrong in IJsselstein, where a crane tipped over and smashed a neighbor's roof when it was supposed to lower the prospective groom down to his waiting girlfriend. The miniaturized model was quickly recreated by staff at Miniworld's studio once they knew there were no injuries in the incident.
