The residents of 23 homes on Potsmaat in Doesburg, Gelderland were evacuated around 8:00 p.m. on Monday night due to a gas leak in one of the houses. A resident struck a gas pipe with a shovel while working in his crawl space, De Gelderlander reports.

The main gas line was turned off, and the fire department and Liander worked on closing the leak at the site. Part of the residential neighborhood was also closed down with police tape to keep people from wandering in.

A gas leak near Amsterdam Central Station temporarily halted train traffic in the Dutch capital during rush hour on Monday morning. The leak was discovered around 8:30 a.m., and fixed by 9:20 a.m., but ProRail expects it will take a while yet before all trains are running on schedule again, ANP reports.

Trains running between Amsterdam Central, Duivendrecht, and Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena were affected. NS reports that the delays are decreasing.

A large fire broke out in an empty supermarket in the Nijmegen shopping center Weezenhof during the early hours of Tuesday morning. A lot of smoke is being released. The fire department advises local residents to stay out of the smoke and keep windows, doors and ventilation closed. People are also instructed to stay away from the area as there may be a gas leak, the Telegraaf reports.

More than half of the 400 chemical- and other companies with a large risk factor in the Netherlands violated safety rules over the past two decades, the Volkskrant reports based on a survey of inspection reports. Over a fifth of the cases involved a medium to serious violation, according to the newspaper.

While the leak of carcinogenic formaldehyde at chemical company DuPont in Dordrecht was "very dangerous", it caused no immediate damage, State Secretary Sharon Dijksma of Infrastructure and Environment wrote to parliament. The long-term effects of the leak are not yet clear

Two cranes installing a portion of the Juliana Bridge in Alphen aan den Rijn toppled over Monday afternoon, injuring as many as 20 people. The regional safety office initially suggested about two dozen were hurt, but said that number could actually be lower.

The Dutch Safety Board has ruled that the explosion in an apartment building in Diemen on September 4th last year was an avoidable accident, according to their report on the incident. Two people died in the explosion and 15 others were injured. The explosion caused a huge amount of material damage. More than 200 people were displaced and 32 apartments were so severely damaged that they were uninhabitable for months.

Police restricted the Marktplein in Geldermalsen after a natural gas leak was discovered around 11 a.m. on Monday. Approximately 10 shops and 35 apartments were evacuated, with shopkeepers and residents placed at a Red Cross shelter, police report.

Sixteen people were removed from their homes after gas and water leaks occurred on Bellinistraat in Capelle aan den IJssel, Zuid-Holland early Wednesday morning. There was no damage to the affected homes and no residents were reported injured.
