Man arrested in Maastricht after vandalism and gas leak incident

A 42-year-old man from Maastricht was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly vandalizing his home and leaving the gas valve in his residence open, prompting authorities to evacuate nearby homes, police said.

Officers received a report around 7:30 a.m. that the man was destroying his property on Alentelaan, located in the western part of the city. Police described the home as being "completely wrecked."

An hour later, the man was located on Ruttensingel, where he was taken into custody. According to authorities, the suspect left a trail of destruction between his residence and the location where he was apprehended.

Upon arriving at the scene, police noticed a strong smell of gas emanating from the house, which led them to evacuate nearby homes as a precaution. Residents were instructed to leave immediately while authorities secured the area. Emergency responders were able to contain the gas leak, allowing residents to return to their homes around 9:30 a.m. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
