Officials looking into the cause of a tragic carbon monoxide poisoning case in Doesburg say a charcoal barbecue grill is to blame. A 61-year-old father of 12 died in the incident, and his 45-year-old wife and 7-year-old son were hospitalized.

Their condition has improved since the Wednesday incident, and they are no longer in life-threatening danger.

The residents of 23 homes on Potsmaat in Doesburg, Gelderland were evacuated around 8:00 p.m. on Monday night due to a gas leak in one of the houses. A resident struck a gas pipe with a shovel while working in his crawl space, De Gelderlander reports.

The main gas line was turned off, and the fire department and Liander worked on closing the leak at the site. Part of the residential neighborhood was also closed down with police tape to keep people from wandering in.

Power outages in Amsterdam and Arnhem left thousands of people in the dark on Monday. Power is already restored to Amsterdam, and Arnhem residents should have electricity again by 1:30 p.m., grid manager Liander said on Twitter.

The Amsterdam outage affected some 26,700 residents of West and Nieuw-West, according to Het Parool. The Slotervaart hospital had to switch to backup power, but the OLVG hospital and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital were unaffected. The outage also caused some disruptions to tram lines 1, 2 and 17.

Some 30 thousand households in Zevenaar, Doesburg, Rijnwaarden and surrounds were without water for nearly 24 hours due to "bad luck", according to water company Vitens, the Gelderlander reports.

Aykut K., a 26 year old Doesburg man believed to be fighting for a terrorist organization in Syria, died some time ago. His family told Doesburg mayor Loes van der Meijs of his death during a discussion, the municipality confirmed to the Gelderlander.

The police arrested a 40 year old man from Arnhem in Doesburg on Tuesday. The suspect threatened to take a child away from his ex wife and then take the child to Syria. The suspect had a bag with him which presumably contained explosives. The bag caused quite a commotion, which finally ended when the police blew it up.
