Waterboards in the northern parts of the country have started closing dikes as a stormy wind blows across the Netherlands on Tuesday. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for a large part of the country. The strong winds warning is in effect until at least 9:00 p.m.
The heavy rainfalls of the past days put a dike in the German city of Hamminkeln, just across the border from Zevenaar, under so much pressure that it could break at any moment. If the dike in the Issel river is breached it would flood the A3 highway making traffic between Arnhem and Oberhausen impossible
The Dutch government gave artist Daan Roosegaarde an budget of 13 million euros for an artwork along the famed Dutch Afsluitdijk. The artwork should turn the 32 kilometer long dike, which is being renewed and strengthened in the coming years, into a "Smart Highway".
Ajax football players had their training interrupted on Friday morning when the police arrested a robber just outside the training pitch, after fishing him out of the dike.
Eastern Netherlands up to Zwolle can be flooded if a dike breaks on the German side of the border in the catchment area of the Rijn.
