Dutch dredging company Van Oord to build island near Dubai
Dutch dredging company Van Oord has secured a contract for the land reclamation of Naïa Island Dubai, a new artificial island development just off the coast of Jumeirah. The project, led by Dubai-based investor Shamal Holding, will span approximately 13 hectares and feature 6 kilometers of beaches.
While financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, Van Oord emphasizes that the design is inspired by the natural beauty of an unspoiled island. The development will prioritize the preservation of the existing beach environment, incorporating open green areas and coastal landscapes.
Van Oord and Shamal Holding have already worked together on several major coastal development projects including Dubai Harbor.
For the reclamation, Van Oord will excavate over 28 million cubic meters of sand and place approximately 4.3 million tons of rock. The company will also construct essential maritime infrastructure, including quay walls. Completion is scheduled for the first half of 2027.
The island is set to host the region's first Cheval Blanc maison, marking the luxury brand's debut in Dubai. The resort, slated to open in 2029, will offer 30 suites and 40 private pool villas, along with a select number of branded residences and estate plots.
Van Oord is a Dutch family business with over 150 years experience. The company works on numerous projects in the Netherlands, including dike reinforcement projects, and the development of offshore windparks.
