The police arrested Rotterdam athletics coach Jerry M. on suspicion of sexually abusing minor girls for years at various sports clubs in the Rotterdam region. The investigators are also looking into abuses "outside the Netherlands", the Public Prosecutor announced. 

Over the past months the authorities spoke to 60 people in the athletics world, the Prosecutor said. The man was now arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and sexual acts with minors. The decision about whether he will be prosecuted will be made later this week.

The Public Prosecutor launched an investigation into Jerry M., an athletics coach from Rotterdam who confessed to sexually abusing a number of teenage girls for years, NOS reports.

The 58-year-old man confessed this past summer after an investigation by the sports and judiciary institute ISR. The ISR found that M. abused at least nine victims, the youngest of whom was 11 years old, between 1983 and 2017 at various athletics clubs in Rotterdam and The Hague.

The Netherlands ended the joint European Championships for athletics, swimming, cycling, gymnastics, golf, rowing and triathlon in Berlin and Glasgow with 43 medals - 15 gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze. With that the Dutch athletes won the fourth most medals, after Russia, Great Britain and Italy, NU.nl reports.

About 780 thousand people got up in the early hours of Sunday morning to see Dafne Schippers make it to 5th place in the 100 meters at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, according to NPO's viewer figures. This was the first time ever that so many people in the Netherlands were waching television at around 3:30 a.m.

For the first time in history a Dutch woman has broken the 11 second barrier in a 100 meter run. Dafne Schippers ran the 100 meters in 10.94 seconds in the FBK Games in Hengelo, thereby breaking the Dutch record of 11.03 seconds, NOS reports.
