Dutch woman, 55, hurt in mass shooting at Mexican tourist destination

A 55-year-old Dutch woman was injured in a deadly shooting at the historic pyramids in the ancient Mexican city of Teotihuacán on Monday. The perpetrator opened fire on a group of tourists, killing a Canadian woman in her early twenties and injuring multiple others, before he took his own life, the Mexican Security Cabinet reported on X.
The shooting happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. Dozens of tourists were at the top of the Pyramid of the Moon when a man standing on the pyramid’s platform began shooting, a guide on the scene told the news agency AP.
According to the local authorities, the Dutch woman sustained a muscular or skeletal injury. She was treated at the scene and then transferred to a hospital.
Another 12 people were injured, including two children, a 6-year-old from Colombia and a 13-year-old from Brazil. The other injured include one person from Canada, one from Russia, and two from Colombia. The remaining victims are locals.
The victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Eight remain in hospital, including the Dutch woman, the Security Cabinet said on Tuesday. The other five were discharged.
The Dutch woman was initially misidentified as being from Brazil. It was not immediately clear whether she was connected to any of the other victims.
“What happened in Teotihuacán deeply pains us. I express my most sincere solidarity with the affected individuals and their families,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on X. “I have instructed the Security Cabinet to thoroughly investigate these events and provide all necessary support.”
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Hart van Nederland that it is aware of what happened in Mexico, but cannot comment. The Ministry has not received a request for consular assistance.
