Video: Explosive lay on Enschede supermarket's shelf for 3 days before exploding

An explosive lay on a supermarket shelf in Enschede for three days last month before it exploded in the middle of the night, causing devastation in the store. The police asked for the public’s help in identifying the man who placed the explosive on the RTV Oost program Plaats Delict.

The police shared footage with the broadcaster showing a man walking into the Plus supermarket in the Eschmarke district of Enschede and placing the explosive on a shelf. This happened on Friday afternoon, March 13.

Shortly after midnight on Tuesday, March 17, the explosive went off in the supermarket. That morning, staff found the store covered in glass shards and broken products. They called the police.

“The suspect took an enormous risk,” a police spokesperson told RTV Oost. The supermarket was open all day on Saturday and Monday with an explosive lying on the shelf. “We dread to think what would have happened if the explosion had taken place in a busy store.”

The man had a thick beard and was wearing a long dark coat, a cap, and a backpack when he placed the explosive in the store. The police think the suspect may come from Germany. He was seen entering the Netherlands near the Overijssel village of Glanerbrug on foot. After visiting the supermarket in Enschede, he headed back in that direction.

“We hope that someone can tell us more about his escape route,” the police spokesperson told the broadcaster. “Perhaps he traveled part of the route from Glanerbrug to the supermarket in a vehicle, or he got into a vehicle at the border in Germany. All information regarding this is welcome.”

“Also, if anyone can tell us who this man is, where he is, or why he did this, we would like to hear it,” the police spokesperson said.
