As the number of online grocery orders skyrocket, supermarkets in the Netherlands are scrambling to hire more workers in order to keep up with the demand and limit waiting times for deliveries as much as possible. Supermarkets hired hundreds of extra employees over the past weeks, NOS reports.

Dirk van den Broek passed away last week Wednesday in Aerdenhout at the age of 96, was confirmed on Tuesday. His funeral was held in his private circle. The man was known for opening the Netherlands first ever supermarket and growing it into a chain.

Some 1,039 people in the Netherlands who previously tested positive for coronavirus have died since the end of February, Dutch public health agency RIVM said on Tuesday. The figures include an additional 175 people whose deaths were recorded in the previous 24-hour period.

Supermarkets and drug stores in the Netherlands will introduce a door policy starting immediately. One customer per 10 square meters is allowed inside, and once a store is full, customers will have to wait outside.

Taking a shopping cart is also now mandatory in supermarkets, even if a customer only wants one product, the central food trade association CBL announced on Tuesday, NU.nl reports.

Self-service wholesalers like Makro and Sligro will temporarily open to consumers during the coronavirus crisis, the association for supermarkets and food service companies CBL announced on Thursday. This forms part of an emergency package that the food sector presented to Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Wednesday.

Some 18 more people who tested positive for coronavirus in the Netherlands died since Wednesday, public health agency RIVM said. In total, 76 people who were infected have died ranging in age from 63 to 95 years old.

Another 409 people were also diagnosed as being infected with the virus, which raises the Netherlands total number of positive test cases to 2,460. To date, 489 people have required hospitalization, including at least 177 who were being treated in intensive care on Wednesday.

Supermarkets in the Netherlands are being called to take measures to ensure that everyone can get their shopping done during the Covid-19 crisis. Minister Eric Wiebes of Economic Affairs asked that they reserve an hour for elderly customers every day. Actor Thomas Acda started a Twitter action through which healthcare workers in Amsterdam can place their grocery orders and pick them up after their shift.

A majority in the lower house of Dutch parliament wants gas stations and supermarkets to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products by next year. According to the CDA and ChristenUnie motion, tobacco products should only be available in specialist shops, AD reports. 

The parties want the government to make agreements with supermarkets and gas stations on this matter. If these stores do not stick to the agreements, the government should force them with a legal obligation. This plan is supported by the CDA, ChristenUnie, D66, SP, GroenLinks, PvdA, 50Plus, PvdD, and SGP.

The number of supermarkets in the Netherlands that are open until 10:00 p.m. on weekdays more than doubled in the past five years. Now one in seven supermarkets are open until late night, according to figures from website Openingstijden.nl, which keeps tracks of stores' operating hours, AD reports.

Protesting farmers will not block supermarkets' distribution centers on Wednesday, the lawyer representing action group Farmers Defense Force (FDF) promised in court on Monday in summary proceedings filed by supermarket chains' organization CBL. According to the lawyer, the FDF never planned to block distribution centers and cause supermarkets to have empty shelves the week before Christmas, NOS reports.

A couple in Haarlem got the fright of their life on Monday when their 4-year-old grandson was nearly abducted while they were shopping at a Vomar supermarket. A strange man picked up the boy at the play corner of the store and tried to walk off with him. His grandfather was luckily nearby and managed to stop it, the boy's grandmother wrote on Facebook.

Organic supermarket chain Marqt is merging with Udea, the parent company of organic chain Ekoplaza, the two parties announced in a press release on Thursday. A majority of their shareholders approved the merger.

Both chains have a strong position in the organic shopping market. By merging, they hope to further strengthen that position.

Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality wants supermarkets to stock more locally sourced products. She believes that a short food chain will strengthen the connection between farmers, conservationists and consumers, and thereby increase consumers' appreciation for food and where it comes from. 

The Minister is therefore organizing, in collaboration with the provinces, a special trade mission to make local products more widely known and to stimulate short chains of delivery, Schouten wrote in a letter to parliament.

The municipality of Rotterdam is working on a Rotterdam Prevention Agreement to encourage Rotterdam residents to live healthier lives. Part of that is discouraging unhealthy diets by countering the opening of more fast food chains, and promoting a more responsible and healthier product range in supermarkets, the office of mayor and aldermen said in response to questions by Leefbaar Rotterdam city councilor Michel van Elck, the Telegraaf reports.

Dutch supermarkets are determined to use less and more sustainable packaging, according to supermarkets' association CBL. The goal is to reduce packaging material by 20 percent by 2025, RTL Nieuws reports.

The supermarkets will start with the handling of fruit and vegetables. "The most important question is what the function of the packaging is. Where it is possible and also the sustainable solution, packaging material will be significantly reduced."

Branch organization for supermarkets and food service companies CBL expects that Dutch supermarkets' turnover will exceed 1 billion euros in the Christmas week. The organization calls this a new milestone, the Telegraaf reports.

CBL thinks that supermarkets in the Netherlands will be at their busiest on the Sunday and Monday before Christmas. Most of the fresh produce will be sold on Monday, December 24th.

A large number of supermarkets will also be open on Christmas itself - over 700 on Christmas Day and more than half of all supermarkets on Boxing Day.

The second floor of a parking garage of supermarket Deka in Wormerveer collapsed on Tuesday. It is not yet clear if anyone was hurt or killed. Emergency services are at the scene, NRC reports.

At least five ambulances, the fire brigade and police are at the parking garage. Firefighters are not yet able to enter the collapsed structure, because it is still too dangerous, a spokesperson for local safety office Veiligheidsregio Zaanstreek-Waterland said to the newspaper.

An argument about cutting in line escalated into a stabbing incident in a supermarket in Vlaardingen on Thursday. One man was injured. A suspect was arrested, at his own birthday party, NU.nl reports.

The victim was taken to hospital in unknown condition.

The police arrested the suspect at his home in Vlaardingen. When they arrived there, a birthday party was underway. It turned out to be the suspect's own party. He turned 53.

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.

A 49-year-old man stabbed his ex-wife with a chisel in a supermarket in Bergen op Zoom on Wednesday morning. The man was arrested almost immediately after the incident, AD reports.

The man entered the supermarket around 10:50 a.m. and walked right up to his ex. He stabbed her with a chisel, injuring her. 

A police officer in civilian clothing happened to be in the supermarket and witnessed the attack. She ran after the perpetrator, overpowered and arrested him, despite his resistance. Bystanders helped her.

Jumbo is the cheapest supermarket in the Netherlands, according to an annual study by consumer program Kassa. Albert Heijn is the most expensive, RTL Nieuws reports.

For this study, Kassa bought the same, common products from large national supermarkets Albert Heijn, Aldi, Jumbo, Lidl and Plus. 26 products were bought from each store. Albert Heijn turned out to be the most expensive, with the basket of groceries costing 46.01 euros. Jumbo came out cheapest at 41.25 euros.

Amsterdam police chief Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg is annoyed at a number of supermarkets in the Red Light District, that bought extra beer and liquor to sell to English football supporters who came to the Dutch capital to watch the Netherlands vs England practice match. These supermarkets did not take their responsibility to prevent drunken football hooligans rampaging through the city, according to him, Het Parool reports.

One in three supermarkets in the Netherlands will be open on Easter Sunday this year, almost double compared to two years ago. A handful of shopping centers will also be open on Sunday, the first time ever in the Netherlands, according to Openingstijden.nl, AD reports.

63 percent of Dutch municipalities are now allowing supermarkets to be open on Easter Sunday. This year 31 percent of supermarkets in the country are making use of this possibility, compared to 16 percent two years ago.
