Man found dead on road in Maren-Kessel; 23-year-old arrested in suspected hit-and-run
A passerby discovered a dead man on a rural road in Maren-Kessel Friday night, and police arrested a 23-year-old local man about 20 minutes later in connection with what investigators believe was a fatal traffic collision involving a van, Omroep Brabant reports.
The body was found around 3:30 a.m. on the Kesselseweg, in the outside area of Maren-Kessel. Police said the man had injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. They believe the victim might have been cycling at the time of the incident.
Officers initially found no suspect at the scene. Roughly 20 minutes after the report, police detained a man a short distance away on the same road. Investigators believe he was driving the van involved in the collision. In a separate report, the vehicle was described as a delivery van and as a taxi bus.
The suspect, a 23-year-old man from Maren-Kessel, was taken to a police station for questioning. His vehicle was seized for forensic examination.
Police cordoned off both the presumed location of the collision on the Kesselseweg and the spot where the vehicle was found to conduct their investigation. A tent was placed over the victim’s body at the scene.
