Family appealing no-prosecution ruling for police officer who fatally shot 15-year-old
Two relatives of 15-year-old Jerryson are appealing to the court after he was fatally shot by police in Capelle aan den IJssel last September. Prosecutors have declined to charge the officer involved. Attorney Jeffrey Jordan, representing Jerryson's father and foster sister, confirmed that to AD.
The incident occurred at a McDonald's in Capelle aan den IJssel. Police had responded to a report of a fatbike robbery, in which a converted gas pistol was used in the robbery. Jerryson fled on foot with the weapon.
The pursuing officer gave multiple verbal warnings, according to prosecutors. He then fired two warning shots. After that, he fired aimed shots at the teenager.
Last month, the Public Prosecution Service ruled the shooting was justified and the officer was not charged.
Attorney Jeffrey Jordan said the investigation and video footage from the incident raise serious questions. The family has therefore initiated an Article 12 procedure, which will ask the Court of Appeal to review the Public Prosecution Service’s decision.
