Wind gusts of up to 100 km/h again expected in the Netherlands today
The Netherlands can yet again expect strong, sustained winds, accompanied by heavy gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour on Monday. The blustery weather again raised concerns for the safety of bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians, prompting a Code Yellow weather warning from Dutch meteorological institute KNMI.
Large boughs and branches can snap off of trees when the wind is this strong, meaning pedestrians and road users need to be very careful on Monday afternoon, the KNMI said. The adverse weather will hit all provinces of the Netherlands and will whip across the IJsselmeer and Wadden Sea. The strong gusts “can be difficult for traffic, especially for cyclists, trucks, and cars with trailers,” the KNMI said.
The weather warning will take effect at noon in the southern provinces of Limburg, Noord-Brabant, Zeeland, and Zuid-Holland, before expanding to cover Noord-Holland and Utrecht an hour later. Nearly all of the country will be under the Code Yellow alert from 2 p.m., except the northeastern provinces, where the warning begins at 3 p.m.
The alert should be lifted in Utrecht and the southern provinces by 5 p.m. and by 6 p.m. in Noord-Holland, Flevoland, Gelderland, and Overijssel. But Drenthe, Friesland, and Groningen can expect the winds to continue until 7 p.m., as well as those along the IJsselmeer. Anyone close to the Wadden Sea or on the Wadden Islands should remain on alert until 11 p.m. on Monday.
On Monday, temperatures in the Netherlands are expected to peak at around 12 degrees before dropping to 6 degrees by the afternoon. Winds will shift from the south to the southwest, intensifying throughout the day. Gusts could reach up to 100 km/h along coastal areas and the Wadden Sea. By the evening, the wind will decrease slightly, but the chance of additional showers remains. Overnight, temperatures will dip to 2-3 degrees, with the winds still reaching up to storm strength in some areas.
On Tuesday, the weather will remain unsettled, with intermittent clouds and occasional sun. Showers, including some hail, are possible. Winds will be moderate, but coastal areas and the Wadden Sea will experience stronger gusts, reaching up to 6-7 on the Beaufort scale. Afternoon temperatures will reach around 5 degrees. In the evening, showers may persist in northern regions, with winds continuing to strengthen along the coast.
