Two years in prison for Amsterdam gay bashing

A 27-year-old man was sentenced to two years in prison, six months conditionally suspended, for attempted manslaughter and aggravated assault by the court in Amsterdam. He was part of a group of four who attacked two homosexual men on the Damrak in Amsterdam in June last year, NOS reports.

The two victims were walking through Amsterdam city center with two friends towards Amsterdam Central Station. One friend was dressed as a drag queen. A young man started insulting them, but it went no further than that. A short time later the couple was walking on Damrak when the group of four men suddenly attacked them. Both victims were injured, one needed surgery.

The 27-year-old man convicted today ran up to one victim and jumped up, trying to kick him in the head. "That he did not hit the head directly, was only a matter of luck", the court said, according to NOS. The judge ruled that the man had the intention to kill is victim.

The three other perpetrators in this attack were tried and sentenced in March. At that time the police were still looking for the 27-year-old man. Two of the other suspects were sentenced to three years and four months, and two years and four months in jail. The third was sentenced to 4 months in prison. The 27-year-old man's sentence is shorter, because according to the court the court, it wasn't proven that he attacked the men because of their sexual orientation.
