Dutch brothers Armin and Arash N. regret assaulting a waiter in Prague last year, they both said during the first day of the trail against them in the Czech capital on Monday. They are facing charges of attempted murder or manslaughter. If they are convicted, they face up to 18 years in prison, Het Parool reports.

Natural healer Sara G. from Kockengen in Urecht was sentenced to eight years in prison for manslaughter on Wednesday. The 59-year-old woman treated a Swedish woman with the controversial rehabilitation drug ibogaine, after which the Swedish woman died. The Public Prosecutor demanded 10 years in prison against G., NOS reports.

The Swedish woman came to the Netherlands to seek help for her drug addiction. She stayed in G.'s bed and breakfast, where she died in February 2017. According to the Prosecutor, G. did not properly inform the woman about the risks of using the drug.

A 71-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing his wife and getting rid of her body. The then 36-year-old woman disappeared from Siddeburen in 2010. While her body was never found, the court considered it proven that she was killed and that only her husband could have done it, NOS reports.

Minister Sander Dekker for Legal Protection is working on a law that will prevent judges from only giving community service sentences to people who used violence against aid workers and police officers. In all cases these offenders have to go to jail, even if only for a day, Dekker announced on Tuesday, AD reports.

On Tuesday the court in The Hague sentenced a 44-year-old man to 20 years in prison for brutally robbing and murdering 85-year-old Ans van der Meer from The Hague in 2017. His 35-year-old partner was sentenced to nine months in prison for laundering the loot, NU.nl reports.

Friends found the elderly woman dead in her flat in Loosduinen in June 2017. She had been severely beaten. Her sternum was broken, as was her thoracic vertebra, nine ribs and nose. The woman died from suffocation.

The police are allowed to force a suspect to unlock their smartphone with a fingerprint scan. This method is not in conflict with the principle that a suspect does not have to cooperate with their own conviction, the Noord-Holland court ruled on Thursday in a case against three men suspected of phishing activities. All three suspects were convicted, NU.nl reports.

Videos surfaced showing detainees having a party in a Dutch prison. The two videos were recorded on a smartphone in the Zuyderbos penitentiary in Heerhugowaard in October last year, the Telegraaf reports. 

The videos show prisoners filming each other while they dance and rap. They can also be seen throwing kitchen furniture. What can't be seen on the videos, is any intervention by prison guards.

The court of appeal in Den Bosch sentenced John F. to 12 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend Linda van der Giesen. In 2015 F. shot and killed Van der Giesen in the parking lot of a hospital in Waalwijk, where she worked as a nurse. He also threatened and stalked her for some time before her murder.

Two men suspected of involvement in terrorism were sentenced to up to 3 years in prison by the court in Rotterdam on Monday. They were convicted for participating in a terrorist organization, NU.nl reports.

Altaf T., a 30-year-old Iraqi-Swedish man, was sentenced to 3 years in prison. Secan A., a 22-year-old from Vlaardingen, got 30 months, 12 of which conditionally suspended.

The court sentenced 40-year-old Shurandy S. to 20 years in prison for murdering Reduan B., brother of key witness Nabil B. The judge considered it conclusively proven that S. gunned down the innocent man at his business in Amsterdam on March 29th last year, RTL Nieuws reports.

The court in Alkmaar sentenced 47-year-old Husseyin A. to 20 years in prison for killing 19-year-old Milica van Doorn in Zaandam in 1992. The sentence matched what the Public Prosecutor demanded, NOS reports.

Milica was found dead in a pond in her home town of Zaandam in June 1992. She had been raped and murdered. Traces of DNA were found on her body, but these did not lead to a suspect at the time.

Two young men were sentenced to 20 and 25 years in prison for assassinating two men in Rotterdam-Beverwaard in December last year. The two perpetrators were both 18 years old at the time of the murders, NU.nl reports.

The court in Amsterdam sentenced three men to up to 13 years in prison for large-scale cocaine trafficking. Large batches of cocaine were smuggled out of South America on container ships, thrown overboard at sea, and then fished out by fishing boats from Urk and brought to the Netherlands, NOS reports.

The most severe punishment was imposed on Muhammed S. According to the court, he played a leading role in the smuggling network, which has been trafficking cocaine to the Netherlands since 2015. S. was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Six poultry farmers were sentenced to prison and community service for committing fraud with their poultry rights. They kept more poultry and produced more manure than they had permits for. They must also pay the illegal profits they made back to the State, totaling in an amount of 860 thousand euros, NOS reports.

According to the judge, the farmers all violated the Fertilizers Act, which is intended to reduce the surplus manure and livestock containment in order to protect the environment. By doing so they created unfair competition.

A 50-year-old piano tuner from Tricht was sentenced to one year in prison and institutionalized psychiatric treatment for assaulting a pastor in her church in the Gelderland village of Rhenoy last year. The Public Prosecutor demanded eight years in prison against the man, NOS reports.

Four Belgian men were sentenced to five years in prison for gang raping two Dutch women for hours in an Antwerp hotel in March of this year. One of the men took the Dutch women, aged 21 and 22 years, to his hotel room on Mechelseplein after a night in a nightclub, after which he and his friends raped them, RTL Nieuws reports.

The prime suspect of a terrorist attack on a number of bicycle tourists in Tajikistan in July was sentenced to life in prison, sources in the Asian country said to NOS. Four tourists were killed, including a Dutch man.

On Monday the court sentenced 40-year-old Toon N. to 12 years in prison for shooting and killing Yassine Majiti in the parking lot of Beachclub Sunrise in Best last year. The Public Prosecutor demanded 16 years in prison against the man, the Telegraaf reports.

The shooting happened during a salsa party early on the morning of November 6th, 2017. There were several disturbances between the groups of men that the victim and suspect belonged to. The fight spilled over into the parking lot, where Majiti was shot in the head at close range.

On Monday the court of appeal sentenced Mario H. to four years and six months in prison for attempted manslaughter. In January last year H. assaulted a 46-year-old former psychiatric prisoner with a snow shovel because the man had tried to lure his then 14-year-old daughter into a sexual relationship. According to the court, H. beat his victim hard enough with the snow shovel that he "knowingly accepted the chance that he would die as a result", NOS reports.

A 77-year-old man from Amsterdam was sentenced to four years in prison by the court in Zwolle. He was convicted of sexually abusing four girls in Southeast Asia, for creating, possessing, sharing and importing child pornography, and for possessing and importing animal pornography, NU.nl reports.

The court in Breda sentenced Klaas Otto, founder of outlaw motorcycle gang No Surrender, to six years in prison on Thursday. He was found guilty of extortion, assaulting and threatening two car dealers, and laundering 1.3 million euros, NOS reports.

The court sentenced 21-year-old Azim A. to 10 years in prison and institutionalized psychiatric treatment for randomly shooting a student in the city of Groningen last year. He was convicted of attempted manslaughter. The student, Sidney Ruiter, survived the shooting, but is permanently paralyzed, RTL Nieuws reports.
