Gunshots fired at prison parking lot in Alphen aan den Rijn; Suspect still at large

Gunshots rang out early Friday morning in the Eikenlaan parking lot of the prison in Alphen aan den Rijn. One person was treated for injuries in connection with the incident, but they did not suffer from a bullet wound. The gunman was still at large later in the day.

The incident happened at about 6 a.m. Official details have not been released, and police have not divulged a description of the suspect involved, nor a possible motive.

“We are currently investigating what exactly happened there,” a police spokesperson told ANP at the end of the morning. The victim was treated at the scene, but it was not clear if they were hospitalized.

A local business owner reviewed security camera footage of the crime, telling AD, “You see someone sitting at the bus stop” for several minutes. “The moment two people walk out of the prison, he gets up and goes over to them.”

A portion of the area was cordoned off during the police investigation. Prison staff arriving at the scene to start their shift were initially denied entry.

Several police units have been brought in, with search dogs and a helicopter assisting in the operation. Shortly after 7:00 a.m., police sealed off a wide section of the area surrounding the prison to conduct their investigation.
