Body found in search for missing swimmer

Emergency services found a body in recreational lake Hilgelo near Winterswijk while searching for a missing swimmer on Tuesday. The victim has not yet been identified, NU.nl reports.

The missing swimmer is an asylum seeker living in the asylum center in Winterswijk. He disappeared under water after jumping from a raft on Monday. The man was at the water with other asylum seekers from the center.

The authorities have been searching for the man with a dreg boat, divers, a sonar boat and drones since he disappeared under water. For privacy reasons, the police did not release any details about the man's identity.

The popular lake Hilgelo is currently closed to the public, while emergency services search for the missing man.

Hilgelo is a former sand extraction location, according to NU.nl. The lakes in the area are very deep and cold and often have undercurrents.
