A major fire in a snack bar in Rotterdam prompted the evacuation of 16 buildings and at least 50 people in Rotterdam West on Sunday evening. Four people were treated for smoke inhalation, one of whom had to go to hospital, RTV Rijnmond reports.

The fire department responded to reports of a fire in the snack bar on Schiedamseweg at around 8:00 p.m. Extinguishing the fire was a complicated task, given that the snack bar is surrounded by other buildings.

A fire broke out in a building occupied by squatters in Rotterdam on Sunday night. Three people sustained injuries - they were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, Rijnmond Veilig said on Twitter.

One of the tree injured is a child, bystanders told broadcaster NOS.

The fire started in the basement of the building on Roosstraat for as yet unknown reasons. The building's residents discovered the fire, went outside and alerted emergency services.

Around 20 people spent a large part of Thursday night stuck in the upper part of the Euromast in Rotterdam. A malfunction resulted in the rotating glass elevator refusing to descend, NOS reports.

Those present in the Euromast, were stuck in the tower for nearly six hours, until technicians finally managed to get the lift - which gives  a spectacular panorama view of Rotterdam - moving again.

The fire department said that the people stuck in the tower did reasonably well while they were up there. "Fortunately, the heating had not failed," a spokesperson said to NOS.

An elderly man was found dead after a fire in his home in Voorschoten in Zuid-Holland during the early hours of Friday morning. Firefighters discovered the man's body when they managed to enter the burning home.

The victim was 96 or 97 years old, according to NOS. He lived alone, the police said. The man's house was considerably damaged in the blaze, but the houses around it were spared.

How the fire started is not yet clear. Firefighters quickly managed to get it under control. Surrounding residents did not need to be evacuated.

A fire broke out in an apartment building on Roomtuintjes in Amsterdam on Thursday evening. Seven people were treated for smoke inhalation, three of them had to go to hospital. The cause of the fire is not yet known, AT5 reports.

The authorities believe the fire started in a kitchen on the third floor of the building. A bystander told the Amsterdam broadcaster that the home was completely destroyed.

The residents of the building were evacuated and checked over by paramedics, while firefighters extinguished the fire.

At least two people were killed in a house fire on the outskirts of Duiven on Friday morning. The Gelderland police reported the first fatality at around 8:40 a.m., and the second one half an hour later. Firefighters are still searching the house for victims, bystanders told De Gelderlander.

Emergency services responded to the home on Roodwilligenstraat just after 8:00 a.m. The fire department responded with four fire trucks and a lift. A trauma helicopter is also at the scene.

A fire that broke out late Tuesday night in a dementia care facility left one resident dead. Police were still investigating the cause of the blaze just before midnight, and declined to release the victim’s identity.

It started at about 9:20 p.m. at the Amaris Florisberg residential care facility on the Kocherplantsoen in Muiderberg, Noord-Holland. Firefighters worked to control the flames for about an hour before giving an all-clear signal, the regional fire department said.

The Amsterdam-Amstelland Fire Department is washing cars to raise funds for their Australian colleagues on Thursday. Locals can have their cars washed for "a symbolic amount of €7.50 (or more)". All money raised will go to "our fire brigade colleagues who have been fighting bush fires in Australia for weeks, without getting paid for it", the fire brigade said on Facebook.

The art'otel on Prins Henndrikkade in Amsterdam was evacuated on Monday morning after a gas leak caused a major fire in front of the hotel, which is located across the street from Amsterdam Central Station. So far no injuries were reported, a spokesperson for the police said to NU.nl.

At 11:09 a.m., the fire was reported to be a "medium-sized fire". The alarm was elevated to "large fire" at 11:10 a.m., and to "very large fire" five minutes later.

Thijs van Lieshout, the new commander of the Amsterdam Fire Department, received a threatening letter from his own staff. The man started as commander in October. He received the threatening letter at the end of November, Het Parool reports based on a message Van Lieshout posted on the fire brigade intranet.

Two boys arrested on suspicion of setting a fatal fire in the entryway of an Arnhem apartment building were released from pre-trial custody by a magistrate in Gelderland. The magistrate said that while there was sufficient evidence linking the 12 and 13 year old to the fire, their "personal circumstances" must also be taken into account.

Two other family members were killed in the fire, the father, 39, and their son, 4.

Three people were seriously injured and nine others were hurt at an apartment complex in The Hague after smoke caused by several car fires billowed into their building. Several people were rescued by firefighters on ladders and aerial platforms as first responders evacuated part of the street.

At least five vehicles parked in a car port on the street showed signs of fire damage. Suffocating clouds of black smoke rose from the street into the apartment windows above, leading to the injuries

Two pre-teen boys were being held by police Wednesday afternoon in connection with a fire in Arnhem that left two members of a family dead, and two other family members critically injured. Fireworks were being investigated as the cause of the fatal blaze based on security camera footage recovered at the scene, police said.

Police took the two boys, aged 12 and 13, into custody, police said on social media. They are being held on suspicion of causing a fatal arson.

A man and a 4-year-old boy were killed in a fire in an apartment building in Arnhem early on New Year's morning. A woman and girl were seriously injured, the Gelderland police said on Twitter on Wednesday morning.

The fire started in the entrance hall of the building on Gelderseplein at around 1:00 a.m. The two adults and two children were found in the elevator. Whether it involves a family, is not yet clear.

The Netherlands Fire Brigade wants to make more use of drones in fighting fires and measuring for dangerous substances, among other things. "Sometimes they can make the difference between life and death," Stephan Wevers, chairman of Brandweer Nederland, said to the Telegraaf. 

The fire department started experimenting with drones in 2013 and last year got a license to fly all over the Netherlands. "We carried out more than 150 flights this year and it showed that drones are already indispensable as our eyes and noses in the air", Wevers said.

A soaking wet train passenger and two others suffering from symptoms of hypothermia prompted an emergency response to Venlo, Limburg. One man had fallen into water in Eindhoven, and was pulled out by two others, a spokesperson for the fire department told AD. All three men are from Tanzania, and were taken to an area hospital for medical care, the police said in a separate statement.

A five-year-old boy who was trapped under the rubble of a snack bar which blew up on Saturday was rescued five hours after the explosion. The boy, known as Kenan, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital in serious condition, according to authorities in Drenthe.

He is the son of the snack bar's owner, according to RTL Nieuws. He was in communication with emergency workers during his ordeal, but it is not clear if that was still true several hours into the ordeal.

The boy's father, who owns the Ali Baba grill cafe, was taken to the hospital soon after the explosion.

A massive fire broke out at a Mission Foods bakery on Industrieweg in Roermond on Wednesday before 6:30 a.m. Emergency services are at the scene in large numbers. Due to a risk of explosion, first responders evacuated a radius of 400 meters around the factory.

The fire started in a building where tortillas are made, according to 1Limburg. Multiple employees were in the building at the time, but they all managed to get outside without being injured.

One person was killed in an explosion on a factory site on Kwinkweerd in Lochem on Monday morning, the Gelderland police said on Twitter. The cause of the explosion and the identity of the victim are not yet known.

The explosion happened in a sea container at the Twentsche Kabelfabriek, according to emergency services reports. The company manufactures electricity and fiber optic cables. Part of the site was cordoned off by police tape and screens were placed around the sea container, wrote Omroep Gelderland.
