Maastricht airport braces for surge of flights as Belgian strikes reroute air traffic
Maastricht Aachen Airport is preparing for a significant increase in flights this week as a major Belgian strike forces airlines to reroute aircraft, the airport said Sunday.
The disruption follows a strike by Belgian union members from ABVV, ACV, and ACLVB, who plan to stop work Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in protest of the Belgian government’s proposed reform plans.
On Monday, Qatar Airways will divert four planes from Las Vegas to Maastricht for a brief stopover. Each aircraft is scheduled to continue to Qatar one hour after landing.
On Wednesday, the airport expects eight passenger flights from Wizz Air, along with eight cargo flights operated by Qatar Airways and Colombia’s Latam Cargo.
“The fire department will assist with loading and unloading aircraft, and our office staff will help guide passengers,” the airport said.
