Three swimmers rescued from sea in Scheveningen; One still missing
Emergency services searched in vain for a swimmer missing off the coast of Scheveningen at the Zuidelijk Havenhoofd on Sunday evening. The swimmer went into the sea with three others but disappeared around 8:30 p.m. The other three were rescued from the water. Another person is missing in the Markermeer after a boat capsized between Hoorn and Edam.
The emergency services responded to the Zuidelijk Havenhoofd with helicopters and boats after the report of the swimmers in trouble. They called off the search for the last missing swimmer when it got too dark to see, said the local security office, Haaglanden Veilig.
An eyewitness saw rescue workers pull two “boys” out of the water. “They both had legs covered in blood. There was also a mother there who was panicking and screaming,” the witness told Omroep West. According to them, the boys tried to save the missing swimmer but couldn’t get close. “The water was so wild, really impassable. Those boys barely survived.”
The rescued swimmers were taken to the hospital. Their current condition is unknown.
Markermeer
Another person is missing in the Markermeer after a boat capsized between Hoorn and Edam at around 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, a spokesperson for the police confirmed to ANP.
The boat had four people on board, three of whom ended up in the water. One managed to get back on board under their own power, and the rescue society KNRM rescued the second.
The coast guard launched a large search for the missing person but had to call it off without success when it became too dark to see. The police will continue the search on Monday.
