Over the past decade, more than 2,500 children disappeared from asylum centers in the Netherlands, NRC reports based on figures from the Central agency for the reception of asylum seekers COA and guardianship institution Nidos. The COA registered these children as left "with an unknown destination".

A 10-year-old girl from Eritrea died in a hospital in Maastricht on Thursday after she fell from a window of the asylum center in Heerlen on Saturday, a spokesperson for the central agency for the reception of asylum seekers COA confirmed to De Gelderlander.

The girl fell from a first floor window, and very unluckily landed on her head. She was rushed to the academic hospital in Maastricht with serious injuries.

Two people were injured in a stabbing at an center for asylum seekers in Oisterwijk on Friday morning. One of the two victims was transported to an area hospital under police guard, a witness at the scene told broadcaster Omroep Brabant.

The other victim had a leg injury that was treated at the scene. The witness told the broadcaster there was a “large puddle of blood.”

The stabbing was reported shortly before 6 a.m. at the center on Kievitsblekweg in the Noord-Brabant town. The motive for the incident was still unknown a short time later.

The police are investigating the death of a man at a shelter for asylum seekers on Kazernelaan in Weert on Wednesday morning. 

At around 8:45 a.m. the police and other emergency services responded to the asylum center after receiving a report of a possible fight. At the scene, they found the man's body. He was a resident of the asylum center, according to the police.

"The police are taking multiple scenarios into account and are investigating", the police said. Investigators currently assume the man was killed in a crime.

The Koninklijke Marechaussee intercepted a tour bus containing around 65 Moldovan people near the asylum center in Ter Apel on Monday morning. The 57-year-old bus driver and a 50-year-old co-driver were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking, a spokesperson for the Marechaussee said to NU.nl.

There is a serious shortage of reception places for asylum seekers in the Netherlands. The asylum centers are currently at full capacity, sheltering 27 thousand people. But from January 1st, around 37 thousand places need to be available, NRC reports based on internal documents from the central agency for the reception of asylum seekers in the Netherlands COA.

The reception centers for asylum seekers in the Netherlands are currently filled to bursting, the central agency for the reception of asylum seekers COA said on Thursday. So far this year, the COA sheltered nearly 27 thousand people, just below the level of 2016 when the Netherlands was dealing with the aftermath of the refugee crisis, NU.nl reports.

A young woman asked the internet to help her find someone special to her heart. In the 90's, Mevan was a 5-year-old refugee living in a shelter in Zwolle. One of the aid workers in the shelter gave her a bicycle. "I just want  to know his name. Help?" She asked on Twitter. And with success, according to Weblog Zwolle.

The central agency for the reception of asylum seekers COA wants to spread asylum centers more evenly across the Netherlands, which means that new asylum centers will mainly have to open in the west of the country, Milo Schoenmaker, chairman of the COA board, said in an interview with newspaper AD.

Three people were injured in a stabbing incident in an asylum center in Hardewijk on Monday night. All three victims are residents of the asylum center, according to the police.

Two of the victims sustained serious injuries, the third only minor ones, NOS reports. They were taken to hospital for treatment.

The police are investigating exactly what happened. As far as is known, no arrests were made.

These kids left the asylum centers and their current whereabouts are unknown, the newspaper writes.

Police in Winterswijk are investigating evidence suggesting arson may have caused a fire at a residential center for asylum seekers. Several people living at the Amstelstraat facility were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

No victims were hospitalized.

Firefighters rescued several people after the “medium-sized fire” was reported early at about 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, police said. The blaze swept through the first floor of the housing complex, but was quickly brought under control by firefighters.

Union FNV received 60 reports in two weeks' time about unsafe working conditions at asylum centers across the Netherlands. Most of the reports concerned daily violent incidents, both among the residents and towards the staff of the asylum centers. The union is shocked and calls for immediate intervention, ANP reports.

The employees of special reception locations for problem causing asylum seekers have major trouble with a growing group of residents who have addiction- or psychological problems. The employees can not manage the antisocial or criminal behavior of these residents, the Inspectorate for Justice and Security said, RTL Nieuws reports.

A 14-year-old boy was injured in a stabbing incident in the asylum center on Kievitsblekweg in Oisterwijk, Noord-Brabant, on Sunday. He was taken to hospital. The perpetrator, another boy, can't be found and has therefore not been arrested yet, NU.nl reports.

The two boys got into a fight at around 2:30 p.m. The victim was stabbed in the face. The police are investigating and already spoke to multiple witnesses.

The Rotterdam-Beverwaard asylum center will stop taking in asylum seekers from safe countries following a number of incidents involving such asylum seekers in the center, Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb wrote in a letter to the city council. This halt is being implemented in agreement with the COA, the central agency for the reception of refugees, RTL Nieuws reports.

Between April and August of this year, there were a total of 20 incidents in the asylum center, Aboutaleb wrote. "In the period from mid-August to the present, this number has increased to 69 incidents."

Emergency services found a body in recreational lake Hilgelo near Winterswijk while searching for a missing swimmer on Tuesday. The victim has not yet been identified, NU.nl reports.

The missing swimmer is an asylum seeker living in the asylum center in Winterswijk. He disappeared under water after jumping from a raft on Monday. The man was at the water with other asylum seekers from the center.

Emergency services searched recreation lake Hilgelo near Winterswijk for hours for a drowned man on Monday night. The man jumped from a raft and disappeared under water, NOS repots.

According to the police, the victim is a young man living in a nearby asylum center. He was swimming with some other residents fo the center when he disappeared under water.

Three people were arrested in the asylum center in Weert on Monday evening on suspicion of violence and vandalism. Initial reports stated that a man was threatening others with a firearm, but the police emphasize that this was not the case, the Telegraaf reports.

Sources told regional newspaper 1Limburg that tensions were high in the asylum center all day and that a man with a firearm threatened to shoot people. According to the police, this is not what happened and there was no question of a hostage situation.

Minister Sigrid Kaag of of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation wants detention centers for asylum seekers in Libya to close as soon as possible, she said after paying a visit to such a center in Tripoli. She was horrified by the conditions in which asylum seekers live in these centers, RTL Nieuws reports.

Last year 77 percent of Dutch adults felt that the Netherlands should shelter asylum seekers who fled their country due to war or persecution, according to a survey by Statistics Netherlands. Half said that asylum seekers who left their countries for economic reasons should not be allowed to live or work in the Netherlands.

The presence of an asylum center has no measurable effect on safety and crime in a neighborhood, scientific research and documentation center WODC concludes in a study done on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Security. State Secretary Mark Harbers sent the results to the Tweede Kamer, NOS reports.
