The first peewit egg of the year was found in Giesselanden in Zuid-Holland on Wednesday. The discovery of the first peewit egg traditionally signals the coming of spring and is deeply rooted in Dutch history. 

Andre Hornstra, a volunteer at Nature and Birdwatch Alblasserwaard, found the egg on a pasture in the Botersloot polder and reported it to LandschappenNL at 6:14 p.m. The egg was checked later in the evening, and it was determined to be a fresh egg.

Thick fog can reduce visibility on the roads on Wednesday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for a large part of the Netherlands. 

Visibility may be reduced to less than 100 meters in some places. From 8:00 a.m. onwards the fog should start dissipating. Only Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, and Zeeland are not affected by the weather warning.

Despite pleasantly warm weather this past weekend, spring has not yet arrived in the Netherlands. A cold weekend is ahead for the country. Meteorological institute KNMI expects minimum temperatures around -3 degrees on Friday night.

From Friday cold air from the Arctic region will blow into the Netherlands, according to Weerplaza. Rainfall starting on Friday night will gradually turn into snow. Maximum temperatures for Saturday will hover around freezing, KNMI expects.

Bird flu was found at a duck farm on Leidijk in Kamperveen on Tuesday morning, spokesperson Hennie de Haan of the Dutch poultry farmers' union NVP confirmed. "This is horrible news. We were just hoping to be past it", De Haan said to De Stentor.

"I got the news this morning. Usually this is the period that the wild birds fly away and that the avian influenza risk therefor leaves. That is why this news hit so hard", De Haan said to the newspaper. It looks like highly pathogenic variant of the virus, which is very bad for the animals. "But that has not been confirmed yet."

From winter to spring in one week. This past Saturday skating enthusiasts across the Netherlands had a ball on natural ice. And tomorrow is expected to be the warmest day of the year yet, according to Weeronline.

Afternoon temperatures will range from 12 degrees in the north, to 15 degrees in the Randstad, and even as high as 17 degrees in Limburg on Saturday, according to the weather service. The morning will be cloudy with some showers. During the afternoon, most of the rain will move northeast out of the country and there may be some periods of sunshine.

Two king pythons were found dumped on the street in a residential neighborhood in Amsterdam on Saturday, according to Animal Ambulance Amsterdam. 

The animal ambulance responded ot the residential neighborhood after receiving a report of "two large snakes" on the street. Rescuers were deployed, expecting to find grass snakes that naturally occur in Amsterdam. "On arrival we did not find grass snakes, but two king pythons." Animal Ambulance Amsterdam said on Facebook.

A 74-year-old Dutch man died after an unfortunate fall while ice skating in Belgium last week. The man landed on his head and fell through the ice, ANP reports.

The incident happened in nature reserve Asserbroekse Meersen near Bruges. Bystanders managed to get him out of the icy water quickly, but he sustained serious injuries in the fall.

The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition. He later passed away there, the police confirmed on Monday.

A woman from Boijl was attacked by a Spanish Sayaguesa bull while hiking on the Wapserveld with her husband on Sunday. She was left with a big gash on her face, and a big bruise on her side, her husband Karel Bakx said to RTV Drenthe.

"The animal was on the path, so we always go around it", Bakx said. Normally nothing happens, but this time the bull attacked his wife. "We were still lucky", Bakx said to the broadcaster after describing his wife's injuries.

Dutch municipalities can do much more to reduce the emission of green house gases in the Netherlands, according to a study by GroenLinks' scientific office. Party leader Jesse Klaver is therefore focusing on the 'green campaign' in the run up to the municipal elections, because he believes municipalities can make a big difference in the fight against climate change, NOS reports. 

The municipalities have influence on more than a third of the country's total emissions, and not all municipalities are doing everything they can to reduce emissions, GroenLinks concludes.

A skater was rescued from the icy waters of the Langeraarse Plassen in Ter Aar on Sunday some 40 minutes after he fell through the thin ice, RTL Nieuws reports.

The man was rescued by divers from the fire department, a police officer and a bystander. He was rushed to hospital. Paramedics examined the rescuers at the scene. They were unharmed.

Christoph van Ingen from Oostzaan took a bizarre photo while skating on a ditch in his neighborhood on Thursday - a kingfisher bird perfectly frozen in the ice.

"We saw something blue in the ice and stopped to see what it was", Van Ingen said to RTL Nieuws. He took a photo with his phone and posted it on Instagram.

Numerous skating enthusiasts braved the cold, and possibly thin ice, to go skating on the Amsterdam canals on Friday. The Prinsengracht was particularly popular, with dozens of skaters spotted on the canal.

Two skaters fell through too thin ice on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam on Thursday. One managed to get out of the water himself, the other had to be rescued. Bob Maas, the unofficial ice master of the Dutch capital, thinks that the ice on the canals will be thick enough to skate on safely over the weekend, Het Parool reports.

The weather is still icy cold in the Netherlands. Meteorological institute KNMI issued two code yellow warnings, one for slippery roads and one for ambient temperatures below -15 degrees Celsius.

The icy roads warning is in effect for all provinces except the northern ones. "Adjust your driving behavior", the KNMI warns motorists. Drive slowly and keep a safe following distance. "Follow weather reports and warnings."

A daredevil skater was spotted on the Keizergracht in Amsterdam on Thursday. Despite some Amsterdam canals being to promote ice forming, the ice on the canals is still not thick enough to skate on safely, Waternet warns.

Technicians of Dutch drinking water companies have their hands full today. The icy weather resulted in water pipes and water meters freezing in hundreds of places across the Netherlands, AD reports.

The phones at Vitens, the largest drinking water company in the Netherlands, are ringing non stop, a spokesperson said to the newspaper. "By 11:15 this morning we already received 579 phone calls, considerably more than usual. The icy east wind in combination with the frost causes a lot of damage."

The icy weather currently in the Netherlands means that skating enthusiasts can enjoy the natural ice at numerous ice skating clubs throughout the country. One skating enthusiast used a drone to film a beautiful video of skaters enjoying the natural ice rink of skating club De Vennen in Noord-Brabant. 

"We have five centimeters of ice", Jan van de Wiel of De Vennen said to Omroep Brabant. "It is beautiful for natural ice. The free nature. Enjoy the sun rising. The outside air and the wind. You have to overcome all these factors on natural ice."

Meteorological spring kicks off in the Netherlands on Thursday with a code yellow warning for extreme cold. Low temperatures combined with a strong wind create ambient temperatures below -15 degrees Celsius across the country, meteorological institute KNMI warns.

Motorists in the north of the country, especially on the Wadden islands, should also be careful of slippery roads caused by snow that hasn't melted away yet. "Adjust your driving behavior", the KNMI warns.

Transit company Arriva closed the toilets on its trains to prevent poop and urine freezing in the collection system in the extremely cold weather the Netherlands is currently experiencing. Stickers on the toilets inform passengers that they cannot be used, NOS reports.

Closing the toilets is a precaution, an Arriva spokesperson said to the broadcaster. "It is really extremely cold for our country. So we are preventing damage and the trains having to be taken out of service." Arriva expects this measure will be in effect until Saturday.

Achmea expect to pay out more than 100 million euros in claims for damages caused by the two storms that raged over the Netherlands in January, the insurer announced on Wednesday. This includes damages suffered by the agricultural sector, NU.nl reports.

Since Tuesday nights salt trucks covered over 31 thousand kilometers of roads throughout the Netherlands with around 2 million kilograms of salt. Ice breakers are also on standby, to help any ships that get into trouble on freezing water, Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat said. 

Throughout the winter, the Rijkswaterstaat already sprinkled some 80 million kilograms of salt on the roads to combat slickness and iciness and thereby keep the roads accessible and safe. "We drove around the world about 33 times this winter", the department said on Twitter.

Emergency services pulled a skater out of the freezing water on Middelland in Hank on Wednesday morning after he fell through the thin ice. The 75-year-old man from Sleeuwijk in Noord-Brabant was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, where he later passed away, police said in a statement.

The man was skating on Gat van Loopgauw, on the edge of nature reserve De Biesbosch, when the accident took place. Passersby saw him in the water and called the emergency services just after 10:30 a.m.
