Icy roads, caused by wet areas on the road freezing overnight, are expected to cause traffic problems across the Netherlands during morning rush hour. 

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country. Motorists are warned to adjust their driving behavior and follow weather reports and warnings. The iciness will melt away during the course of the morning.

After roaming the woods of the small Overijssel town of Lettele for nearly two months, cow Hermien was finally caught on Sunday night. She was anesthetized by veterinarians and transported to a rest home for cows who no longer produce, a spokesperson for owner Herman Jansen said to RTL Nieuws.

Hermien caused danger on the road over the past days, so it was necessary to intervene.

The province of Groningen was hit by another earthquake caused by gas extraction on Sunday afternoon. The quake had a magnitude of 2.2, according to meteorological institute KNMI. It's epicenter was in the town of Garrelsweer at a depth of 3 kilometers.

On Thursday a This one's epicenter was in Scharmer, near Loppersum.

Motorists can expect a busy rush hour on Monday morning due to icy roads and showers. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for all provinces except Friesland. 

The northeastern parts of the country should be careful of icy roads the entire day. In the rest of the country, the iciness should melt away during the course of the morning.

An earthquake was felt in Groningen on Thursday afternoon. According to meteorological institute KNMI, the quake had a magnitude of 2.0 and it's epicenter was near Loppersum at a depth of 3 kilometers. 

The quake happened around 4:30 p.m., according to broadcaster NOS. Dozens of people from Loppersum, Zeerijp and Garrelsweer reported feeling it. The KNMI called it an 'induced' earthquake, which means that it was caused by gas extraction.

Snow expected to start falling in the Netherlands later this morning, is already causing problems with air traffic. Schiphol lists a number of flight cancelations, and KLM announced on Thursday that the airline is canceling 26 flights scheduled for Friday. Motorists, especially in the west of the country, are warned to be careful of icy roads during morning rush hour.

The Netherlands can expect snow on Friday, according to meteorological institute KNMI. A code yellow warning for snow and icy roads will be in effect all day on Friday.

The snow will start in the west on Friday morning, and spread out to the rest of the country during the course of the day. KNMI expects between 1 and 3 centimeters of snow. The western parts of the country may also see some rain in the afternoon. 

Motorists are warned to be careful of icy roads and to adjust their driving behavior - drive carefully, slowly and keep a safe following distance.

Last night was the coldest February night the Netherlands had since 2012, when temperatures below -20 were measured, according to weather service Weerplaza. Many places in the country saw minimum temperatures drop below -10 degrees Celsius during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Around 6:15 a.m. on Wednesday temperatures measured -10 degrees or lower in Eeldde, Heino in Overijssel, and Wijk aan Zee in Noord-Holland.

The coldest night of this winter so far is about to hit the Netherlands. Overnight temperatures will drop to between -5 and -8 degrees Celsius, Weeronline expects. The coming days will also have below zero minimums, and maximum temperatures hovering around freezing.

The winter temperatures will last until the weekend, after which it will warm up somewhat, according to meteorological institute KNMI. "Although we certainly can not say that the winter is then over", a spokesperson for the institute said to NU.nl.

The government's climate plans will hit low-income earners in the Nehterlands the hardest, while businesses will see little change in their climate taxes, according to a study by research agency CE Delft on behalf of environmental group Milieudefensie, the Volkskrant reports.

The previous Energy Agreement, implemented in 2013, already hit low income earners harder than high income earners. The new Climate and Energy Agreement - talks on which are expected to start at the end of this month - will increase this inequality, the researchers conclude.

Two people were killed in an accident involving two cars on Zelhemseweg near Ruurlo on Monday morning. A third person was rushed to hospital by helicopter in critical condition. The police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but believe that iciness on the roads may be to blame, Omroep Gelderland reports.

One of the vehicles started skidding and ended up on the wrong side of the road, the police believe. The car crashed head-on with another vehicle. The accident happened just after 7:00 a.m.

The Netherlands has an icy week ahead of it with night time temperatures expected to drop below freezing every night, and maximum temperatures climbing no higher than 3 or 4 degrees Celsius, Weeronline predicts.

Monday starts out mostly cloudy, with morning temperatures hovering around freezing point. The cloud fields will gradually dissipate through the course of the day. Maximum temperatures will range between 1 and 3 degrees.

The police launched a new DNA investigation to try and identify the still unidentified victims of a disastrous storm and flood that hit the Netherlands on 1 February 1953. 65 years after the disaster, 106 of the total 1,835 people who died are still unidentified. For many, this DNA study is the last chance to find family members who died in the disaster, according to Hans Geldof, forensic investigator at the Zeeland-West-Brabant police.

Today is Warm Sweater Day in the Netherlands, a day on which environmental organization Klimaatverbond calls on people to turn down the heating and instead wear a warm sweater to stay warm. With this campaign, the organization wants to draw attention to energy saving as a contribution to fighting climate change.

Small actions done by many people can have a major effect, a spokesperson for Klimaatverbond said to RTL Nieuws. "Because if everyone puts the heating one degree lower for one day, that saves the energy of the annual use of three Wadden Islands."

Motorists in the Netherlands can expect a busy morning rush hour due to iciness on the roads. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning. Very cold days are ahead for the country after the weekend, Weerplaza expects. 

Commuters in the eastern parts of the Netherlands will be particularly affected by icy roads, caused by wet sections on the roads freezing overnight and a hail storm, according to the KNMI. The iciness should melt away later in the morning.

Should the weather play along, people in the Netherlands will be able to see a Super Blue Moon on Wednesday.

The phenomenon blue moon refers to the second full moon in one month, and not actually to the moon appearing blue, according to NASA. This happens around once every three years. The moon is currently also close to it's nearest approach to the earth, which means it appears larger and brighter than normal. This is referred to as a super moon.

Moonrise in the Netherlands is at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and it will disappear below the horizon again by 9:00 a.m.

Two adult ponies were found wandering around the Noord-Brabant town of Maaskantje during the early hours of Monday morning. They were taken in by animal ambulance Brabant Noordoost, who posted their photos on Facebook in an attempt to find the owner.

"They are adult ponies and their health is good", Wim van de Pol of the animal ambulance said to Omroep Brabant. "They walked in the middle of the street in the town of 't Maaskantje in the night from Sunday to Monday. A lady was able to lead them to her garden and we picked them up there."

Many people in the Netherlands have taken action to save Hermien, a cow that in Lettele for six weeks. The Koeienrusthuis volunteered to take her in, animal party PvdD launched a crowdfunding campaign for her care. And farmer and owner Herman Jansen announced that the animal can be picked up for free, De Standaard reports.

Friday and the weekend will be foggy, with occasional sunshine and some showers, meteorological institute KNMI expects.

People almost everywhere in the Netherlands woke up to thick fog on Friday morning. The fog started dissipating during the course of the morning, and should be completely gone by early afternoon, the KNMI expects. A few areas may see some sunshine this afternoon, and there may be some rain inland. Maximum temperatures will rise to around 8 degrees.

A cow managed to escape on her way to the butcher and has been on the run in the small town of Lettele for six weeks. So far all of the multiple attempts to catch or kill the animal have been unsuccessful, the cow's owner said to newspaper AD.

According to the farmer, the cow and one of her siblings escaped last year when they were being transported to the butcher. A veterinarian managed to hit the younger cow with three anesthetic darts, after which she could be driven into the cattle wagon.

The Dutch government wants to start building new houses without a connection to the gas network starting this year.

The Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, already agreed that new homes should not be connected to the gas network. But the government thinks that this can be started sooner than the four years planned. On Thursday the coalition wants to arrange that average new homes are built without this connection, RTL Nieuws reports.

Around a dozen beavers were shot in Limburg in an effort to protect infrastructure in the province, making Limburg the first province in which this protected species is culled. The shooting of these animals was ordered by Limburg water board Waterschap Limburg after they got permission from the province, RTL Nieuws reports.

Today is officially the warmest January 24th in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started being recorded in 1901. The record dating from 1960 was broken in De Bilt at 6:50 a.m. with the thermometer reading 12.2 degrees Celsius, Weerplaza reports.

The day record was also broken at four other measuring points in the Netherlands early this morning, including at Schiphol. And temperatures will still climb somewhat during the course of the day, reaching a maximum of between 13 and 14 degrees. The Netherlands usually gets such high temperatures in mid-April.
