Police seize drugs, loaded revolver from SpongeBob backpack in Almere; 2 women arrested
Two police officers on surveillance in Almere’s Muziekwijk neighborhood spotted two women in a car acting suspiciously on Tuesday and pulled them over. Officers seized multiple bags of hard drugs and a loaded revolver hidden inside a children’s SpongeBob backpack. The two women were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, police reported on Facebook.
The vehicle’s license plate had been mentioned in a Meld Misdaad Anoniem tip linked to drug dealing. After a brief observation, officers suspected drug sales were taking place from the car. They forced the vehicle to stop and detained both women.
A search of the car quickly confirmed the suspicions. Officers found several bags full of hard drugs totaling 73.91 grams of cocaine, 65.40 grams of MDMA, 408.3 grams of GHB, 24.43 grams of amphetamine, and 740 grams of cannabis.
Because the car contained so many illegal substances, it was towed to the police station for further examination. There, authorities found that the SpongeBob backpack also contained a loaded firearm along with the hard drugs.
Following the arrests, police searched two homes in Amsterdam. In one residence, officers found additional quantities of soft and hard drugs. They also seized 180 zopiclon pills, a prescription sleeping medication.
