45-year-old Dutch man arrested after stabbing and chasing man at Swiss train station
A 45-year-old Dutch man was arrested Friday afternoon after he stabbed a 29-year-old man without apparent provocation on a platform at Badischer Bahnhof in Switzerland. The Dutch man then chased the wounded victim, Swiss authorities said.
The attack occurred around 1:15 p.m. at the station, the Basel public prosecutor's office said in a statement. The suspect approached the victim, who was standing on the platform, and suddenly stabbed him with a bladed weapon.
The injured man fled, but the Dutch suspect pursued him. A patrol from Swiss customs and border police happened to witness the chase and immediately intervened, stopping the suspect.
The victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance. The suspect was handed over to police and remains in custody.
Swiss investigators are working to determine the motive for the seemingly random attack and are seeking witnesses. It was not immediately clear whether the Dutch man was known to authorities in the Netherlands or Switzerland.
The Basel prosecutor's office is reportedly expected to reach out to Dutch authorities for more information about him.
