Video: Drunk wrong-way driver strikes taxi on A1 near Naarden

A 33-year-old man from Amsterdam drove the wrong way on the A1 highway in Noord-Holland early Sunday and struck a taxi, police said.

The collision occurred around 6:15 a.m. as the man, who was under the influence of alcohol, traveled toward Amsterdam near Naarden. The taxi carried several passengers, but no one was injured.

At the police station, the man registered 640 micrograms of alcohol per liter of exhaled air in a breath test — nearly three times the legal limit of 220 micrograms per liter. 640 micrograms equates to five to six standard glasses of beer.

Authorities immediately confiscated his driver’s license and seized his vehicle.

Cleanup from the crash caused traffic delays on the A1. The highway toward Amsterdam has been closed between Baarn and the Muiderberg interchange since July 3 for asphalt work and is scheduled to remain shut through Sunday, Aug. 16.
