Aid organizations were working with family of girl stabbed to death in Venlo
The family of the 14-year-old girl from Blerick who was fatally stabbed on Monday had previously been known to child welfare and family support agencies.
This was confirmed by Veilig Thuis, the Netherlands’ national domestic violence and child abuse reporting center, following reporting by De Telegraaf and De Limburger.
Nour was stabbed to death inside her family home. Two residents of the house — a man and a woman — have been arrested and are in custody on suspicion of involvement in the killing.
RTL News previously reported that the suspects are Nour’s parents. The police have declined to confirm their identities or relationship to the girl, citing privacy reasons.
According to Veilig Thuis, there had been two reports concerning the family in the past. The most recent was two years ago, after which authorities took action. No further reports were received after that.
Neighbors told NOS there had been ongoing problems and increasingly heated arguments at the residence for some time.
A memorial has been set up near the house, according to regional broadcaster L1. Neighbors and schoolchildren have been placing flowers, stuffed animals and drawings there. Candles have also been lit at the site.
Children from a nearby elementary school made a large drawing of a teddy bear, which now hangs on a lamppost by the memorial. It reads: “For sweet Nour.”
A memorial has also been created at Blariacum College, the secondary school Nour attended.
The two suspects are scheduled to appear before a judge Thursday. The judge will decide whether they will remain in custody.
