Cyclist dies after being struck by taxi van on Texel

Updated at 16:00 to include the victim's identity

A 50-year-old Belgian man was killed early Sunday after being struck by a taxi van in De Cocksdorp on Texel, police said.

The crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Postweg, between Slufterweg and Muyweg. Emergency crews, including a trauma helicopter, attempted to resuscitate the man but were unsuccessful.

The driver, a 70-year-old local resident, has been summoned for questioning, police said. While authorities initially reported the vehicle as a car, footage and photos from the scene show a taxi van with severe front-end damage.

Postweg remained closed for the investigation. Police expect the road to reopen later Sunday morning.
