Boy, 16 and mother killed in Roermond house fire; Brother badly hurt; Arson suspected

A 16-year-old boy and his mother died in a house fire on Plutolaan in Roermond on Tuesday morning. His 14-year-old brother was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries, the Limburg police reported. The police suspect arson.

Emergency services responded to a report of the fire at around 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday. First responders found the injured 14-year-old and his mother on the street outside. The other boy’s body was found inside the home. The mother was pronounced dead later in the afternoon.

The fire brigade used an aerial platform to combat the blaze. The fire had spread to both the front and back of the house, a spokesperson for the fire brigade told De Limburger.

Locals told the newspaper that the mother and her two boys lived in the house. They also said that the family was having problems. The authorities would not comment on that to the newspaper.

A police spokesperson told De Limburger that the focus is now on aftercare for locals, firefighters, and police officers who handled the response.

Forensic investigators are at the scene to determine the cause of the fire. “The police are seriously considering arson,” the Limburg police said in a statement. An ANP photographer saw that two empty jerry cans were found in front of the home. The police would not answer any questions regarding this.

Mayor Yolanda Hoogtanders visited the scene to offer support to relatives, neighbors, and first responders. The fire was “intense” and “difficult for everyone,” she said. “We will investigate the situation and then release more information. As mayor, I will determine what aftercare is appropriate.”
