Police investigating possible assassination attempt in Boekelo
The police are investigating a shooting at the Boekelose Stoomblekerij in Boekelo on Tuesday morning. Sources told RTV Oost that it was a failed assassination attempt and the victim is 49-year-old Jeroen B., the main suspect in a major money laundering case. The man was seriously hurt but was not in mortal danger, the broadcaster’s sources said.
The shooting happened in the village near Enschede just after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. According to the broadcaster, the perpetrators shot at B. from a moving car. Emergency services responded to the scene en masse. A trauma was also deployed by helicopter but was canceled before arriving at the scene.
Witnesses reported that one person was rushed to a hospital by ambulance. The police told bystanders that they arrested a suspect. According to RTV Oost’s sources, the victim was not critically injured.
Jeroen B. is suspected of running a large-scale money laundering operation using gold and other precious metals, according to RTV Oost. The Public Prosecution Service suspects him and his accomplices of laundering millions of euros.
The man was also the victim of a hostage-taking almost two years ago. Three men took him hostage and pressured him to retract incriminating statements he made in the same money laundering investigation. The hostage-takers were later sentenced to two months in prison.
