Police: Driver possibly under the influence in crash that hurt children riding fat bike

A 25-year-old motorist from Zwolle may have used alcohol or drugs before colliding with a fat bike in Breda that left two girls seriously injured. The incident in Breda on Saturday critically injured the 8-year-old victim, who was taken to a hospital in Rotterdam. The 13-year-old girl who was also hurt was hospitalized in Breda, police said on Monday.

A police spokesperson would not provide an update to the girls' conditions on Monday. The driver was interrogated after the accident, but was not immediately arrested, she said. Police had previously said the driver was taken into custody.

An initial saliva test after the incident was positive for an unstated substance, but a blood test must provide a definitive answer. At a later date, the Public Prosecution Service will determine whether the man will also be prosecuted for the collision.

"Until then, he is a person involved in this collision and is no longer a suspect," the spokesperson said.

The accident happened at the intersection of the Heerbaan and the Claudius Prinsenlaan, an important main road in Breda. The road was closed after the crash, and an air ambulance landed at the scene.

No details have been released about the cause of the accident.
