Heavy showers expected tomorrow

This past week has not been all that summery in the Netherlands, and that does not look to be changing in the coming days. Friday will be wet and dreary, with heavy showers expected, Buineradar meteorologist Maurice Middendorp said to RTL Nieuws.

The northwest of the Netherlands already had their first taste of what is to come, with heavy showers on Thursday morning. On Friday it is the west of the country that will first see the rain, but the heaviest showers will fall to the east.

"Up to 30 millimeters of rain can fall in half an hour. That's three full buckets per square meter", Middendorp said to RTL. "If the soil is dry, such an amount does not easily absorb into the soil. That can start to flow in hilly areas. People who are on holiday [in the Netherlands] may have to dig a ditch around the tent."

Saturday may also see some showers, though not as much as Friday. "In the days that follow the rain is over for a bit, but we don't expect any great summer weather for now", Middendorp said. Maximums will hover around 18 degrees, compared to the 22 degrees that is usual for this time of year.
