Amsterdam mayor condemns threats made against fire brigade chief

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema condemned death threats made against Amsterdam fire department commander Leen Schaap during her first city council meeting as mayor on Wednesday afternoon.

"On behalf of the city council and office of mayor and aldermen, I express our indignation at the threats to Leen Schaap", Halsema said. "Schaap and his colleagues serve the safety of the population and deserve respect and nothing less than that. The threats tarnish the fire brigade and we do not tolerate that."

Reforms within the fire department will be given priority, Halsema added.

A large investigation team is investigating the death threats made against Schaap. According to newspaper AD, the threats came from members of the Amsterdam fire brigade. Other Amsterdam politicians previously expressed their shock about the threats.
