Amsterdam politicians shocked by threats against fire brigade chief

Amsterdam politicians were shocked by the revelation that Leen Schaap, commander of the Amsterdam fire department, received death threats from members of his own corps. They think it is outrageous, too crazy for words and completely unacceptable, AT5 reports.

"That someone threatens someone else, let alone your own boss, is of course unallowable", Zeeger Ernstig said on behalf of the GroenLinks faction. CDA faction leader in Amsterdam, Diederik Boomsa, called it a "goddamned" incident, according to the broadcaster. Renier van Dantzig of the D66 hopes that there will be "harsh action against this".

Both Leen Schaap and the Public Prosecutor refused to respond to AT5, as the investigation is still ongoing. For the same reason, the Amsterdam politicians are hesitant about saying how this matter should be dealt with. "It is now up to the police to find out what is going on and it is up to the mayor to inform the council about this", Van Dantzig said.

The politicians stress that a priority must be to restore calm at the fire department.
