Police search cellars in Amsterdam neighborhood after fatal shootings

On Wednesday the police started searching a number of cellars, garages and sheds in the Amsterdam neighborhood of Wittenburg. They are looking for any suspicious situations that may have to do with recent fatal shootings in the neighborhood, Het Parool and AT5 report.

Late in January two gunmen opened fire on a community center in the neighborhood, killing 17-year-old Mohammed Bouchikhi and injuring two others. It is believed that Bouchikhi was not the target of this attack. He had no criminal record and worked at the community center as an intern.

The perpetrators may have been aiming at 19-year-old Gianni L., who was one of the two hurt in the shooting. L. was also a victim of a shooting in the neighborhood in November last year. A 19-year-old Amsterdam resident was killed and a total of three were injured. L. does have a criminal record.

The police are searching these storage areas based on tips about suspicious situations, according to the Amsterdam news agencies. They hope to find clues that will help in the investigations into these two fatal shootings.
