Suspect in Heereveen ice rink shooting arrested in Spain

The Spanish police arrested a 57-year-old man on Wednesday who is wanted in the Netherlands for involvement in a shooting at the Thialf ice rink in Heereveen early this year, the police announced on Thursday.

Business man Bert Jonker was injured in his hand when someone opened fire on him in the parking lot of the Thialf on January 7th. Jonker is the director of engineering company Clafis, and the police believe that the motive for the shooting was business related.

The victim immediately informed the police that he knows the man who shot him. He is the former owner of a business that Jonker's company acquired in 2015. At the time the suspect's brother told the Volkskrant the suspect blames Jonker for their company going under. Jonker and his family went into hiding after the shooting.

The police received information that the suspect was hiding in Spain. The Dutch police asked the Spanish authorities to intervene, and the man was arrested in the vicinity of Barcelona on Wednesday. "The investigation team is awaiting his extradition so that he can be questioned and tried in the Netherlands", the police said.

According to the police, Jonker was informed about this development and he is relieved that the man was arrested.
